I just recently adopted my cat Avalanche on the 17th. He didn't eat the first day which I knew would be normal, new home and everything. He started eating and was eating normally by the 18th. On he 19th he went in for a free vet check and they gave him a feline rabies shot. The next day every time he would eat he would throw up, it wasn't right after but a good while after and it was food. It looked like a mix or non-chewed food and chewed food. After that he has not eaten. We went and bought some different food and he only took a few bites and that it ( that was on Sunday night. He did not throw it up but he has not ate since then. He has a appointment tomorrow with the vet but I was wondering if anyone here had an idea of what it could be. He is acting perfectly fine, no other symptoms, drinking water and very happy and himself.

A little about him: He is 8 years old, deaf and from what I was told was taken to the shelter by previous owners because he is afraid of ther cats, and when they took him in from their daughter, they had other cats and he was always hiding. So they finally after about a month decided it was not right and he needed a better home where he would be the only cat. That is all i know though.

When I adopted him they had stated on his paper dry food only but never gave a reason why. He is getting Blue Buffalo Indoor dry food.

about a year ago (around the last time I fed my cats 50:50 canned/dry food) they started throwing up blue buffalo freedom dry, so I quit buying it. I don't know if there's anything wrong with it or if it just doesn't agree with my cats. he probably wasn't getting that kind at the shelter, and sometimes when you change foods, a cat will vomit.

"dry food only" isn't fantastic (you can read up all over the place here why) so see if you can tempt him with some better wet food. I take that back, see if he'll eat fancy feast--most cats like it, just to see if he will eat. it's not the best food and it's not the worst but you can get it at the grocery store until you figure out what kind you'd like to feed him all the time.

I've never seen that kind of reaction to a rabies vaccine but I don't vaccinate for rabies because I live downtown and my cats never go outside. I just think it's an unnecessary vaccination for them but if I lived in a rural area it would be different.

Yikes. From what you say, it seems like it's now been about 48 hours since the last time he ate? I don't know if the rabies shot has anything to do with it or not, but if he still hasn't eaten, I'd be back at the vet tomorrow. Poor kitty. :(

@Cinder: It wasn't the blue buffalo that made him throw-up, it was a small bag of friskes my mom picked up for him till i could get to a petsmart ( car had to go in for some work). He didnt throw up the blue buffalo he ate. I am not sure why the shelter had said dry food only. I am going to call tomorrow and hopefully they can give me a reason why, be it something the owners who turned him in said or something they found out ( though they dont feed wet food there). He isnt an outdoors cat, indoor only but we figured to do it anyway. We always get out pets rabies shots. I just worry about giving him wet food when they said dry food only on his little petfinder article, dont wanna cause him any issues if its some sort of health thing.

@Spirite: Yeah it has been about that but the vet was closed sunday, monday and booked tuesday :( Hoping its nothing serious.

@Hunterseat: Thank you :) i hope he does too

Its just so odd because he is drinking water, acting perfectly fine and normal and yet he seems to have to urge to eat :(

I see. yeah I had a friend a long time ago who was constantly bringing new food that I just "had" to try because "cats love it" lol. she brought over some seafood friskies dry once and my cat threw up in his bowl before he even finished eating it so I thought, "hmmm." my cats would never touch the canned friskies or nine lives, they did love fancy feast though.

the more canned you can get him to eat, the better. they probably wrote that because he's a kibble "junkie" but even the most devout can be changed. but start with meat baby food, fancy feast, plain boiled chicken, anything you can get him to eat.

my cats have had rabies shots (about as often as I take tetanus shots--every ten years or so lol) but none of them ever had a reaction. I just don't know if a reaction to one is relatively common. it might be.

hope your cat is eating. :)

can you try some baby food? get the first stage, with out onions or anything added...
I use Gerber chicken or beef. If he is not at least licking that, then you need to find a new Vet. Kitties need to eat or they will get very sick from liver failure......
It could be a combination of things..new home, skittish kittie, rabies vaccine which is causing him not to eat.
I feed Blue Buffalo wet, and supplement it (when I am working) with a bit of dry.
It is better for cats to eat wet.
The shelter probably fed dry because it is easier and cheaper......
Artie used to throw up when he ate too much dry and ate turkey.
Since eliminating turkey and limiting the dry he is so much better.
I also add a bit of water to his wet...wet food comes in different types: chunks, pate, flaked....ARtie will only eat the flaked. When I buy the chunks, I mash it down a bit. He refused pate completely.
I seriously think that all the changes are too much for him. Artie had 4 homes in 3 months and we went through a lot in this past year. He was nine when I adopted him.
He would not eat, vomited a lot, etc. Turned out he had a upper respiratory infection, after the shelter gave him a healthy pass and visit with their Vet.
so please try the baby food.
If that does not work---go to a Vet, fast......

@artiesmom: I got a hold of the shelter I adopted him from and they said, the only reason they had said dry food only is because that was all his previous owners fed and they wanted it to be known but any one who adopted him. We are going to go get some wet food and try a little to see if he will eat it. If he does we will then mix it with the dry food. He goes to the bowl and sits or lays by it and will look at me or meow like he is hungry but wont touch the food. So it makes me wonder as well if its the flavor. I am going to try before his vet appointment to see if he will eat and then if he does, is he going to throw it up or not.

The vet had to cancel his appointment today but im going to call my normal my tomorrow and get him into them. I feel so helpless, he is drinking water acting normal but seems to want fish flavor only food when he does eat. I just feel lost like its the first food we got is not agreeing with him :/ but wont touch the blue buffalo cause of the flavor

any news yet? I know it is early..
really, try baby food..
mix some wet into the dry and see if that helps...
If you go to Petsmart, maybe try the food in the plastic containers. They are in the same aisle as Blue Buffalo--actually right next to them, at least in the store i go to..
good luck!

Actually, I adopted ARtie one year ago..He was kind of acting the same way, although not as bad. I tried so many different foods and finally settled on a rotation of 3---chicken and one fish. He is very fussy, but I finally think he has come around.
I had to take him to the e-Vet , had a cold and then bad teeth found..
I think when you adopt there is always a chance of something being wrong.
I feel it is better to take them to a Vet who is not the one from the shelter...unless it is a huge one like Angell Memorial in Boston.

new eyes do help on diagnosing things...

If the vet you are using can't make time for an appointment with a cat that has thrown up most of what he's eaten since Sunday, you really should try to find a new vet. If there are any foods he seems to prefer, give him those to eat, so he at least has something in him. Does he seem to be throwing up all of what he has eaten, or lesser amounts?

He has a vet with my normal vet today at 2. I tried some wet food and baby food but he had no interest in it, and i kept trying all day. He does seem to perfer fish flavored food from what i can tell. Since he would eat the first stuff which was fish flavor but not the blue buffalo which isnt. I may try to go get some Blue buffalo indoor fish flavored food and try it.

He didnt throw up the bit of blue buffalo he did eat, but when it comes to the first stuff we got its was a fair amount. He drinks water fine, doesn't throw it up though.

Yes we have been to the vet! sorry for not replying lol. So I decided to go to my normal vey because I tryst them more than anything. I took him and and the vet looked him over, felt his tummy. He said he doubts its blockage because he is in no pain, discomfort and shows no signs of it. He said I also doubt it is any sort of kidney or liver failure because no other sympthoms at all just throwing up and not really eating. He said if anything get a bloodwork done becuase of his age to check for diabitis. He said thats about the ONLY thing he may have because he is such a healthy cat.

So we got some blood work done, and got a pee sample sent to the lab and are waiting for results. They Vet said that he is probably a picky eater and its why he wasn't eating the blue buffalo we had bought and to try it in a fish flavor. But the vet gave him a 150% clean bill of health and he really couldnt believe how healthy he was for being in the shelter, no worms no nothing.. SO.. sure enough I went to pet smart bought indoor blue buffalo salmon flavor and he has been eating since and no throw-up!! Had a pick of a hair throw-up last night but thats it. He is not one for treats and I tried some hairball control ones and he wouldnt eat them, so now I am looking into hairball control products.

So he is doing great, eating his blue buffalo indoor salmon flavor food, no throw-up and is healthy! Just praying his lab work comes back all positive :)

And to just add to why I love my normal vet, the one we originally went to for the free vet check said he had some tarter build up and was a perfect canidate for a teeth cleaning there. My vet looked in his mouth for a dang solid minute and said " his teeth are perfect".

And thank you all for the comments and help :)
