Cats don't cover their "business"

All three of my cats will not cover their "business" when they go to their litter box. If they would just cover it up, the smell wouldn't be so bad! lol....Does anyone know why they do this?!? When they were younger, they would dig and dig and dig in their boxes, but now they go in, do it, and jump out! Could my litter boxes be to small? Maybe it's the litter I use?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Well, what I use is litter combined with Cedar chips. I used pine chips before because I've read so many bad things about Cedar, but I was told that cedar is fine for cats. I add cedar, litter and baking soda to my litter boxes. I am going to buy another litter box *if* I get this other cat tomorrow when I visit the shelter. If I do get another box, I am going to get a bigger size to see if that helps.

Thanks,
Jonathan

One of my cats stopped doing some of it's business in the box.
Because it was a covered box someone here suggested that I remove the cover. I did and haven't had an accident since.

I have a 6 yr old female and 1 yr old male and the male was picking on the female, most likely when she went into the box and she felt trapped.

Maybe your cat just wants to get in and back out as fast as possible because of something simular.

Jonathan,
Instead of spending a ridiculous amount of money on new, larger litter box, go to the Home Depot (or store like that) and purchase a large mortar pan. It's about $4 and it's nice and big. It's perfect for a multiple cat home. We have 3 cats and use it. It's great! We actually have two...this way when one's all dirty we already have another ready to go.
The only thing is that it's not covered, but we bought some "privacy screens" that we placed around it for the cats.
Just an idea!

Thanks for the tip. All mine are covered. The last time I had an uncovered litter box, all the litter got dug out onto the floor, LOL. I've noticed one thing though, when I am changing the boxes, I notice a lot of gnats in the box. I guess they aren't a big deal and will go away in winter, right?

Thanks again,
Jonathan

I only have this problem with Sugar. Twinkie always covers so well.

I noticed something though, when the litter was a little pebbly and slightly dirty from the Littermaid not picking everything up, she would poo and run alot of times. When I handscoop the litter and get all the pebbles out, she actually covers most of the time. Maybe you need to clean it out better......

Get a bigger box b/c once I got a bigger Littermaid my cats loved the bigger size

OR try to use it without a hood but a box with higher sides. I know if I had a hood my cat would probably poo and run still....

Also, you can try to use sand like litter instead of the clumpy woody ones. When I used the pine ones long time ago, my cat never covered or didn't cover well.

Hope you find something that works :!:

One of our two kittens doesn't always cover, then the other one comes along later and covers it up for her. Its so funny... he'll wander on by, notice a big stinking deposit just laying there exposed, he'll look disgusted, then he goes in there and covers it up, then gets back out.
