Cats peeing in the corners and sides of the litter box :(

I recently bought them a jumbo sized litter box, so they could have the extra room in there.

How do they repay me?

They pee in the corners and sides of the box! Kind of defeats the purpose of getting them a large box.

Then I have to go in with my scooper and SCRAPE it off, leaving a big mess and then I have to go clean my scooper.

UGH. Why?!

i don't know if this will help, but our Eliza (21) was missing the box and I moved them away from the wall(s) and the one that is under a shelf at the end of our upstairs hall didn't have enough room heightwise. Or so said the wife, so I raised the shelves up 6" for more headroom. That did seem to help. Eliza seemed to do better after those rearrangements.

I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you .. just making light of the catuation. :)

Maybe get a different type of litter? A non clumping type, like a crystal?

I use the Nature's Miracle crystal litter, and because it evaporates the urine it doesn't clump .. so there is never anything stuck to the pan. I just use the scooper to pick up petrified poop pieces lol.

I know exactly what you are talking about, because my two boy cats do this to and it drives me crazy too. I'm forever having to scrape the sides. There are two separate sides where they do this. As much as it drives me crazy, I have learned to live with it. After all, they are peeing inside the litter box.....hey, I'll take that! Having had issues over the years with this one peeing here, and this one not liking this kind of litter, this is doable. I still gripe, as I'm scraping down the side every time though :)

I didn't think about the hooded boxes...I have two of them but I don't use the tops. I like them tho because they have high sides and no one seems to have trouble with in and out. On the larger litter pan which has low sides and is at the end of the hall under some closet shelves (no door), I sprayed it three times with a can of clear plastic spray. It now seems to have less sticking problems with the clumping litter and it has not flaked off yet but I just did it in early December. It shouldn't as it is a good quality product.

Just cleaned all pans and I am on the way outside to the trash and then some shopping to do.

One was a Rust0Oleum product that said PLASTIC on the front...the other can was empty and I recycled it I have used another product call Plasti-Kote on plastics when they get sunworn or bleached so they lose their shine. I think most paint departments in stores will carry some kind of aerosol clear product.

When I had my Liter-Maid the instructions said to use furniture polish on the pan to stop the litter from sticking...wipe it on, let it dry and fill with clumpable litter. So, I do that occassionally on newer litter pans. I'm soaking one now and will scrub it with bleach and dry it, then use a laquer or Acrylic Urethane paint and keep that one in the basement in case one of my clan gets into the basement to explore and the door gets shut. At least they will use it rather than somewhere else. In winter I don't use the basement much but the W & D and a spare bathroom is down there.

had two cats at one point who used one tray for weeing and the other for pooing
All of mine do this down stairs. We have 2 of the giant litter boxes down there .. One is by the back door the other is around the corner in the massage area .. They only pee by the door and poop I. The one around the corner in the very back (behind the massage table) lol .. I love it!

My girl cat always pees right on the side of the box. There have been a few times lately where she has even peed over the side of the box because she wasn't being careful. I just wish she would go in the middle of the box like her brother. I give the side of the box a wipe when I'm scooping if there is litter stuck and I usually completely dump out the box and clean it with vinegar every 6 weeks or so.

ahh, the old pee on the sides of the box syndrome, eh?
there was a thread very recently on here with all the moms and dads (me and my hubby included) of kitties who do this chiming in, so you are definitely not alone and from all the stories out there, i don't think you have to worry about it being the sign of an illness or anything. as many others have said here, as long as they're using the box, then it's all good!

i do as catmonkeys does with cleaning the sides of the box with vinegar every once in a while. after every single pee i actually scrape the stuff off the sides with cut up pieces of junk mail!!! great way to use that stuff! i keep a huge pile of the stuff next to each box just for this purpose. but you know you gotta use the stuff that's made of stiffer paper. i'm an obsessive recycler so i am even using all the christmas cards we received as litterbox scrapers, too, now. ha ha! if my family and friends only knew...
then after the scrape, i do wipe it down with hot water or vinegar so the box is "pristine" again for our Angel's next bathroom break. she's such a princess.

Small trowels from the hdwr dept cement trowels too, scrapers from the paint dept, windshield scrapers from thrift or dollar stores. I even have some stiff plastic (who knows what they were originally for?) that the wife uses to scrape a dagu cage.

We have used a variety of these. I just found an ice scraper that plugs into a cig lighter in a vehicle. Real heavy duty plastic and it cost 50 cents. I cut the plug off and it has a large handle which works with my old hands. I just started using it and it really scrapes the bottom good and it is only about 4" wide.
