When I first got Tillie she had a rather dirty behind which the vet ended up cleaning it by shaving off the fur.The Vet advised me to clean Tiliie's bottom with cloves next time round. Well, I tried this and lets just say that Tillie was not having any of it. Anybody else had this problem? How did you deal with it? I'm thinking of a towel job but is this being too mean?

Cheers

I have had a lot of troubles with stinky butt in my cat Cleo. She is very overweight and cannot reach her own backend to clean it. When she goes to the bathroom, she likes to sit on the floor and drag her butt across the carpet, poop and all. I have checked her for worms, so it has to do with her weight. Anyway, I know we both don't like her butt being smelly, so I straddle her body on my knees, her butt facing forward. I kind of lock my legs in behind to prevent escape and squeeze slightly with my legs so she knows she has to stay put. I am carful not to put any of my body weight on her. This leaves me in a good position for clipping, wiping, etc... Lots of petting, talking and loving after so she isn't so upset after.
This is the same position I use to brush my cats' teeth, except with them facing the other way of course :D .
If this doesn't work you may have to resort to the towel job. If done slowly and with a loving hand, I do not feel it is cruel. She probably hates having a stinky butt too!

Thanks Queen of the Nile and Ioana for the support. I tried the straddle and Tillie just wasn't having it. I tried the towel but gave up as I felt bad doing it. So I ended up giving her a few treats and while she had a mouth full I quickly wiped. It worked though the sound of her groweling with a mouthful was comical, bless.
Can I ask you Queen of the Nile how much does Cleo weigh. Tillie weighs 7.55kg! I've only had her for 6 weeks, so now she's settled in the Diet begins.
Many thanks again

Actually, Cleo only weighs 7.0 kg, but she is a very small-boned cat. She is only about a foot and a half long (not including tail). My other two, Levi and Lucas, respectively, weigh 7.1 and 6.2 kg, but they are much longer cats. What sort of food do you plan on feeding Tillie? I'm trying to pick a good diet food but it is so hard! Cleo gained 0.6 kg in 2 months on Science diet.
About the bum-wiping, my girl squeals and squirms when I do it and I feel bad, but I am sick of her leaving poop streaks on my carpet!

Hi Queen of the Nile, I've just starting Tillie on the science light diet food, eek I hope she does lose some weight. Tillie has lost some weight over the past 6 weeks that I've had her and that's by just cutting down on the portions. Also I know that she's more active now, as in her previous home she lived under a wardrobe for the past 4 months because she was frightened of the new puppy that the owners had bought. I think there should be a weight watchers for cats. I think the science plan diet is the only diet food you can get over here. I might have a shop around. At least I can cope with the bum cleaning now

Kriskd-- Yoda had that problem too. She couldn't clean her butt or the area just above her tail. The area above her tail became matted and we had to cut it out. She has lost weight, so she doesn't have this problem anymore. But I highly recommend a diet for your cat so you don't have matted fur or racing streaks on your carpet! My mom always called it the 'boot scootin' boogie'!!! hehehe
