so as of right now i have isabel and 3 of her 14 week old kittens. 2 of them are permanent residents of mine and the other one will most likely be, she is supposed to go to a friend of mine, but right now i am charging him kitty rent bc he has to move out of his parents house before he can take her, and this could be a while. lol.

anyway! so right now i am useing one of those big under the bed boxes by rubbermaid as their litter box. and the size isnt really the problem. they all have no problem using the same box, its practically big enough to be 3 normal litter boxes anyway, but the problem is mainly w/their momma isabel, but they have a slight problem with it as well. they kick litter out of the box constantly!!!!!!!! i find myself sweeping literally 10 times a day, if not more, and i find litter EVERYWHERE in the bathroom!! how they got it on the part BEHIND the toliet seat is beyond me. but its driving me insaine.

i've tried putting rugs around the litter box, that hasnt worked very well bc when they jump out they still get litter beyond the rugs. and then i tried taping cardboard around 3 sides to make the sides taller...this sort of worked... they ended up pushing the side that wasnt against a wall over and would lay on it on top of all the litter! it was cute but oh so frustrating. so the other two pieces have worked well in keeping the liter from getting in that crease between the box and the wall but other than that i am still sweeping litter up from everywhere!!!!

so i am thinking of getting a covered litter box.. probably end up getting 2 since i essentially have 4 cats

any suggestions on what type to get? and where to get it at? i am going to go to pet smart tonight bc they seem to have the best selection. but they are pricey :( but god at this point i think it will be worth it. i am so sick of not being abel to walk barefooted in my bathroom w/o sweeping first! i think i will need a really big covered one bc isabel like a roomy litter box.. for such a small cat.. well maybe not that small.. shes 9lbs, she takes up a lot of room!! lol.

All of my boxes are covered and I still get some litter on the floor. I keep one of those Dirt Devil vacs in the bathroom and in the morning and afternoon run it around the room. But for me covered is the only way to go.

I was having the same problem with my kitten so I got one of these at PETsMART...it works wonders! I just put a couple of treats on top and left the other one out until she got used to using this one. It's $30, but worth it to not have to clean that mess up all of the time. I still keep a hand vac around because she still tracks a little bit out, but I don't need to use it near as much now.

I can't figure out how to make the pic appear here, so you'll have to go to the website:

well this is the one i ended up getting the Van ness extra large enclosed litter pan... so far i like it. its a shiny silver color and looks a lot better than the picture.. this one ended up having the deepest pans of all and was a nice big size... maybe i can get away with only having one litter box...bc this was 18.99... a lil pricey.. but oh man i kinda like it already!! so far the cats are fine w/it. but i havnet figured out how to use the door thingy that came with it... it seems like it only allows one direction or the other which i dont understand how they can get in and out of it if it only goes one direction... :?... but the litter hasnt been "kicked out " but when isabel jumps out of the box she brings some with her...i think she jumps out bc she doesnt like the way the mat in front of the box feels... so i may have to work on that... but the kittens dont mind the way the mat feels..*shrug* they like it bc they can climb on top of it though lol!!

I had a covered litterbox, but ended up getting rid of it. Otis was fine with it for a while, but all of a sudden decided to go just outside the door instead. I figured a little litter on the floor was a better alternative than what he was doing  And Jasmine never did use it - she'd go in, play a little hide and seek, then run to the uncovered on to do her business

Did you get one?

I, too, am constantly waging a battle against litter all over the spare room where the cat boxes are. I do have a covered box (the extra large Van Ness one) and I love it, and the cats love it, especially Ashley-she won't even use our other one. The problem I have is with our big rubbermaid that we also use. I think Gaylord and Ivan spend more time in the box throwing litter around then they do doing their business. But at the present time, I am stuck because one box is not enough for three adult cats, and we don't have the money right now to go buy another huge box.........and the cats love their rubbermaid.

^does the door on your van ness work? i tried to use it but i am just so confused on the door. the kittens cant figure out how to get out of it once they get in when the door is on there. i dont konw if i am just doing it wrong or what... but it doesnt swing both ways.. it just goes one way, it wont "flap".. i was thinking of trimming it and seeing how that worked. bc i think w/the door they wouldnt tack so much bc they wouldnt be able to jump out of it like the can w/no door.

yeah i got it at petsmart. and to my surprise, they had the exact same one at walmart and it was more expensive at walmart! even if it was only by a dollar i was definatly surprised i figured pet smart would have been more expensive but for that it wasnt! i also got this really cool litter scooper too. its got a really long handle and has a rubberized grip. its awesome i'll have to take a pic of it bc i don think they have it on the website.

here is the scoop i got.. you can see how much bigger it is than the normal size scooper. its really deep too.

here is the litter box i got. i have it actually sitting on a door mat. sooo much cheaper than buying the same thing only difference is the ones at petsmart say they are "kitty mats" or whatever, but its the same material. this one was 4 or 5 compared to at least 10 at petsmart. :)
