I entered the Cat Forum this afternoon hoping to have found a thread honoring at least one of these two already but, no thanks to all the political mumbo-jumbo to have hit here recently , I guess I'll have to start one myself:

If you listen to or watch the news you've probably already heard about the deaths of Kirby Pucket (due to a stroke) and Dana Reeve (lung cancer).

I wasn't much of a baseball fan but being a midwesterner and living in ND I've always tried to keep up on the goings on with the Twins. Kirby Puckett seemed like such a nice guy. He will certainly be missed. There were pictures on the news of people standing along Kirby Puckett Place (I think that's the name of it ~ Minnesotans correct me if I'm wrong) next to the Metrodome sort of holding vigil.

The whole Dana Reeve thing is just awful. She was such a strong woman and supported her husband, Chris, through all those years after his tragic accident and then ended up with a disease that killed her. I feel so bad for their son. I've heard two reports of his age - one said 15, the other said 13, but either way that poor kid has been through a lot in his years.

God rest both Kirby and Dana's souls.

I'm not in Minnesota anymore, and I've never been a sports fan, but boy did I have a good cry last night over Kirby. I remember my first (and perhaps only) trip to the Metrodome for a baseball game, back in the late '80s. My binoculars barely left Kirby, because we all knew he'd do something wonderful. He always did.

He made the game special back then, bringing heart and joy to a sport that was always too serious. He always had time for the fans.

He'll be sorely missed.

I just heard about Dana Reeve on the news tonight, a couple of hours ago. I'm afraid that I've never heard of Kirby Puckett

Kirby Puckett played Major League Baseball for the Minnesota Twins his entire career. I'm not a follower of baseball but I believe he retired back in the late 90's. He was only 45.

To answer Shengmei, Dana Reeve was the wife of actor Christopher Reeve (Superman fame) who died sometime last year I believe (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone) from complications stemming from his accident where he fell off a race horse and suffered total paralysis. I believe the accident was in the mid '90s.

As a lifelong baseball fan (go Red Sox!), I was deeply saddened by Kirby Puckett's death. He had an amazing career that, tragically, was cut short when he lost his vision to glaucoma. It was always such a pleasure to watch him play. He did everything brilliantly, and with such obvious joy and gusto for the game.

I've been really busy and just now logged on and am glad I apparently missed the drama!

ANYways, yes I was saddened by both deaths. Both of them so young and Dana never smoked and was just diagnosed last August with lung cancer.... how quickly life can be taken away.

It seems there have been so many famous deaths this past month! :(

Thank you for the post.

I am not a baseball fan, but I liked Kirby Puckett. It was hard not to get excited here in Minnesota when the Twins had their great run, and he was a huge part of it.

Dana Reeve's' death is absolute proof that life isn't fair. She was by all accounts a terrific lady who deserved years of happiness, not a death at 45 of lung cancer. :(
