I have two cats and have just finally been able to move away from family into my own apartment. I'm an older person and can't lift or move things well. I live with a partner who is also partially disabled. I saw some threads about litter boxes, but they were either old or didn't address the specific questions I have.

One of the cats is very large - between 25-30 pounds. Because of this he has always had a hard time using the store - bought litter boxes that are available. They are too small. To make him comfortable, I would really like to DIY at least one really big one for him. But I don't want to make it scary for the other cat.

Because of the physical problems that both I and my partner have, I'd like to use a plastic bin that will be easiest to keep clean. It will be really hard to pick up and empty any litter box, but we can't afford one of those self-cleaning ones. I'm considering getting a small shop vac for deep cleaning the litter boxes.

So, specifically I need a large bin that both the big and the small cat can use. It will be easier to clean if it doesn't have a lot of grooves at the bottom or around the sides. I am in the US on a pretty limited budget. My bigger cat doesn't really like covered boxes for obvious reasons (his size).

What type of bin do you guys recommend that I buy to get this project going? I've got a dremel tool to cut out the entry hole, so all I really need is the bin(s).

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you can give.

I have several cats and they're not super crazy about the standard size litter boxes. I ended up getting one of those plastic containers that slide under the bed. It takes a lot of litter to fill on the initial set up, but they love the space. I put the lid underneath, so it catches litter that they kick out, so double win!
