I've spotted the tell-tale spots in Percy's ears. You need a script for ear-mite medicine, right? He will NOT like going back to the vet.

No, I'm pretty sure you can buy Revolution over the counter, either from your vet or from a pet store. If Percy has a fungal problem, that would require a vet visit to swab/culture to determine the best treatment, but spot-on flea/tick/earmite/worming products should be fairly straightforward.

Ear wax is, well, waxy...mite dirt is crusty. That might help you figure out which it is. Also, if you shine a flashlight in the ear, you may be able to see the mites.

every 2 weeks when I cut my cats nails, I put a drop of ear wash in, and gently message the ears against their skull to work it in.

occasionally when my cat scratches and paws his ears, i can hear a smooshy smacking sound which means he's got a build up of ear wax. in a well lit area, i firmly pin down his neck and shoulders to a smooth surface while wearing a welding glove to make sure he does not squirm, then I clean out his ears with Q-tips® cotton swabs and a cat ear wax solution. cutting the q-tips in half first, ensures you don't push them too deep down the ear canal while cleaning. Most say you should only use cotton balls, but I can't get deep enough into the folds of my cats ears with balls. When using q-tips I insert the tip at the top of the ear canal, then drag them out along the ear folds to pull as much debris out as I can. If you don't want to buy something specific for cats, I've read you can also use 3% hydrogen peroxide or saline solution (distilled water & salt).

my two cats have an interesting habit of licking the insides of each other's ears after I have clean them both out.

I've never tried this myself, but my friend has on her dog. If you take a q-tip or something like that and swab down inside the ear and put it on a black piece of paper you can tell if they have ear mites. You usually have to get down inside the ear though to really make sure. I think they are little white things that move around on the paper. My cat had a bad case of ear mites and the vet told me the stuff you buy from the store usually doesn't work that its best to get it from your vet.

the problem with most store bought solutions for ear mites
is the mites have a 3 week cycle of egg larvae adult, so you
might kill the adults, but the eggs will be back a week later
to reinfect the ear. that's why a Month long lasting solution
like applying Revolution® topically into the bloodstream is best.
