Before I take all four of my cats to the vet for ear mite treatment, is there anything that I can buy over the counter that is effective?

Mita Clear seems reputable and should work. It is OTC I think.

Nonetheless, I would call your vet and ask her/him for a recommendation. They might suggest something OTC or have you come in and get a prescription medicine without having to pay for exams.

These days just 1 dose of ivermectin clears up ear mites. I wouldn't fool w/ OTC stuff. Get it done right.

Are you letting your cats go outdoors? If so, ask the vet about preventatives (like Revolution) that can stop it from happening again. Or keep the kitties indoors where they are safe from lots of things (including ear mites).
