Hello!

Jasper is my first cat and now it's Christmas time.
What preventative measures (if there are any) can I take to protect both him & the Christmas decor? I spotted him trying to Crunch on the mini lights, so they've been hung High in the window. Everything So Far has been hung/displayed out of reach BUT Saturday I'm getting a tree. What tips/advice/precautions does anyone have for me on how to deal with Cat & Tree. First of all what can I expect him to do?

Any tips or stories are welcome!
Thanks!

I had alot of trouble last year, at that time I had two kittens both one year old. I had glass bulbs on the tree. Big mistake! they regularly knocked the tree down. I thought I removed all the bulbs and still there was glass breaking. I learned my lesson there, this year no glass!
I also hung all the window lights on the outside of the house.
So this year the two cats are two years old and have not bothered the tree at all, they did not really even notice it. So that is good news!
This year I have a new cat whom is 7 months old and four 6 weeks old kittens!!! AHHH!!! What a mess. I do not have glass on the tree this year, just lights. They have been climbing it though! They have knocked limbs off and pulled lights down. So far it has not been knocked over.
I have heard of things you can do to keep them away. You can place tin foil under the tree, you can also buy some of those clear plastic mats. They have spikeys on the under side that are intended to hold the mat to the floor. Turn the spikes up and place the mat under the tree.
Also if you can tie your tree to a wall ar railing ..something this way she can not knock it over.
Try not to decorate with very many ornaments this year also. Dont put any glass or precious ornaments out this year. Hopefully next year she will grow out of it.
If she is a real bratt about it kjeep a spray bottle filled with water and spritz her if she comes around the tree.

good luck!

I gave up on putting up a Christmas tree. I could never break Stephen's love of climbing the tree, knocking off ornaments and pawing them around, losing the hooks (which by the way HURT)! :D

Maybe you could try the spray bottle as suggested, but Stephen just will go back to the tree when I'm not home. And, I think she likes the torture of being sprayed because she gets attention!

Good luck in whatever you choose to do - It should be an eventful holiday season!!

Omigod, I am so nervous about this Christmas! I don't have a tree but I'm going home to my parents house for the holidays and taking my new addition to the family with me. Should be very interesting because a) my folks are not huge cat people, b) Bella likes to climb EVERYTHING and c) their tree is usually covered from head to toe with all the ornaments we have accumulated over the years. This combination is bound for disasterous results! @@$$

yeah I guess i can see how it would be cute...at someone elses house!
kidding..they are really cute knocking down lights and limbs off the tree. They are sticking their little heads out between the branches and Lilly (my 7 month old kitten) gets all the little kittens wound up :? and so all five of them are running in circles around the tree
I cant waight until I can take the tree down! I am in the habbit of taking it down the day after Christmas because I am so sick of the hassle by then. I wouldnt even have one if it wasnt that my kids would be so upset

TOOO CUTE! I know its dangerous but before anything bad happens i would play with them and enjoy the cutness while it lasts  . And then when things start going south i would take them out of the room.
