When Bear's metal buckle collar had too much excess sticking off of it, I cut it off and then used a match to seal the end (nylon melts and it will keep it from raveling). Of course, that meant that he had to have a second collar once he outgrew the length I'd made it, but I was so happy that he could wear a regular length kitten collar that I didn't care!
