My cat has been meowing a lot sounding distressed and he scratches and mostly licks himself a lot. Is this consistent with a food allergy. I had him on Evo Chicken and Turkey dry (he refuses to eat canned) and I've now put him on Evo Herring and Salmon dry. I would take him to the vet but he is an ex-feral that is particularly wild. It seems to me there isn't really anything a vet can do for a food allergy (if that's what this is) so if I can avoid going that route, I will.

Does it seem reasonable to try him on this other food for a month and if there isn't a change then take him to the vet?

The meowing could be many things. Where is he licking? If it's his paws/legs maybe it's an allergy, If it's his private parts, he could have a uninary infection. You would need to get him to a vet for this. You could always try to record video of his behaviour (if you can catch him doing it) and have the vet look at that.

You can certainly try the other food and see if there is any difference. If not this one is ususally good if he's become allergic to chicken or turkey.

Natural Balance Duck/pea. Most pet food stores carry it.

HOpefully the Herring and salmon dry will help.

Try him on Royal Canin Hair and skin 33, they also have a canned food called beauty.
If it's allergies then many of the ingredients that are in The Royal Canin Hair and SKin 33 may continue to irritate kitty.

I tried the Natural Balance Duck and Peas but he wouldn't touch it.

He licks the area above his tail and his belly and private parts. He doesn't seem to have a UTI because he always pees in the box. He is highly allergic to flea saliva but I get Advantage on him every 4 weeks or when the bumps start appearing. (3 - 4 weeks)
