frustration about fostering

Today I have been feeling so down (keep crying) so I thought maybe if I share this then maybe I can get some advice and/or somehow feel better about this.

I have been fostering this cat since June and I didn't expect to be fostering him for this LONG. The only reason I ended up fostering Tango is because my friend who found him on the street was threatening to dump him back on the street and I couldn't allow that.

After I picked Tango up from my friend to bring home, I made a deal with SPCA where they would cover the costs of neutering, microchipping and giving him all the necessary shots if I fostered him and be able to take him to adoption shows. I thought for sure he'd find a home in a month or so because of his personalityand looks!

WELL... EVERY TIME I take him to an adoption show, he turns into hyde/jenkyll! At home, he is one of the FRIENDLIEST cats but in a cage he starts hissing his head off, growling and will bite so of course this deters people from adopting him. I just don't know what to do at this time.

Tango was at his WORST behavior today at the adoption show and I left taking him home during the middle of the show because I was so upset and really hate to see him acting this way. I actually had to tell some kids not to put their hands or fingers in the cage cuz I was really worried about him biting them. That's how BAD he was today! I KNOW he was scared but....

As soon as I brought Tango home, he was fine!

Tango is a 1 year old GORGEOUS cat with unique markings and have many CUTE quirks. He will make someone a WONDERFUL pet....

PLEASE HELP- I am getting really desperate! Any ideas or advice???

Poor baby! Some cats are very shy and scared around strange people and places and in strange situations. have you considered screening possible adopter and having them visit him at your home? This might be much easier on him.

The problem is the interested adopters lost interest when they see him hissing- I have told people that he acts differently at home and invited them to visit him at my home but they all said no.

I have also sent out emails to my friends and asked them to forward the email with a flyer regarding Tango with his pic on it to their friends, family and co workers but have had no luck with that either.

Yes, I've tried feliway and it didn't help...

Here's some pics of Tango so u can see how CUTE he is.

How about a mild calming gel? When we brought Marsh home, we gave him 'Bene-Bac'. It's about $2 at the store, and we drove about 4 hours home without any issues - slept all the way. Maybe you should try it? It will definitely calm him down :)

Just saw your pictures, he's beautiful. Another thing you can do is print the pictures and put them on the cage as well, so others can see how warm and friendly he is. :p

I think if someone is serious about adopting him they will come to your home. I just don't think the right person has found him yet. I believe everything happens for a reason. I really think this person needs to meet him on his turf..in your home to see his true personality anyway. I know if I were looking for a cat I would see a cats true personality better that way anyway and be understanding of that. You should just explain that he gets very frightened about going places in the carrier and therefore needs to meet at your home. In the future this person should also cover the carrier with a pillow case when transporting.

Also, you might consider putting the cat on catster.com or petfinder.com if not already on there. Good luck, Tango will pick out his new owner soon...

Oh, Pamela, *BIG HUG*. You're so wonderful for fostering this little guy. Hang in there. His furrever family will come. Looking at Tango just tugs at my heart, as he looks so much like my Ginza, even that lovey-dovey face in the last pic.

Did you print that pic out? Maybe with a little blurb that says, "Please give this LOVEBUG kitty a chance....he's just stressed out here with all the noise and people. Will reward you with lots of cuddles at home. See?" with that pic underneath it. Something along those lines? Gotta be very short for people to quickly glance at it.

We'll keep rooting for ya over here.

That's a great idea! Instead of bringing him to adoption shows, just bring a big colorful picture with a short blurb. Put it on an empty small carrier that someone might peek into looking for an actual cat and explain the situation.

*nods* That sounds like the best idea to me...it will keep him happier and more stress free. He is such a cutie...I'm sure his future parents won't mind visiting him at your house.

Hi Superkitties! U and I must have been sending each other brain waves! LOL. I thought about that last mon and spoke with my SPCA contact person and it was agreed that I will not take TAngo to adoption shows- that I will email her a brief flyer with some colored pictures and my contact info and she will post that at adoption shows.

Yes he is posted on internet but no luck so far on that part.

Thanks for all the support and comfort. I will keep u guys posted on this.

Where can you get the calm kitty gel. Or the Bene-Bac? I wonder if it would help my Bell. She is my feral that lives in the house. But is so scared she hides all the time.

You can buy Bene-Bac at any pet store, but i'm sure it's not going to help since it's only a temporary solution. I heard for feral cats a very good idea is a 'feliway' plug-in :) The smell/sense seems to calm them down a lot :p
