Has anyone brought home a kitten to your older cats? My 2 are both 4 years old. Neither are particularly friendly and I am wondering, will a 3rd take on the habits of the other 2? Will they eventually like each other? What could I expect? Thanks for any insight.

Hi G-PEG,

I never did, because 2 was enough for me to handle (I am wondering if you have some masochistic tendencies! ;) ).

As you know, it's impossible to predict cat dynamics...it depends so much on the personality of the new kitty. I doubt the newcomer would just take on the habits of the other two, especially as you're talking about a kitten. I just posted in another thread that all kittens seem to have one personality: kitten personality. So crazy amounts of energy, bouncing off the walls, more interested in play than being lap cats.

Your cats might adopt the kitten, or the kitten might adopt your two, or yours might hate the kitten, though the kitten will probably not care, at least at first...But you know your cats' personalities, so I'd use that to try to figure out what kind of cat they might accept. If they're lap cats, for example, I'd probably look for an independent cat who won't be competing for your attention. That's where the kitten personality part is a bit problematic, although it is also true that your cats are more likely to accept a kitten. Maybe an older kitten whose personality is a bit easier to assess?

All I know is I have two that would both like to be the only cat in the house. They have their own personalities so I wouldn't worry about a kitten becoming like the others but who knows how they will all get along.

Well I think you would be taking a big chance with two adult cats that that "aren't particularly friendly". A kitten will monopolize a LOT of your time and attention and you risk making either one or both jealous.

Yeah, you guys are probably right. I should just stick with the status quo. Why upset the apple cart. I've been needing a baby! I've been wanting to get a puppy but that fell through because my hubby got a new job and our work hours don't stagger as they did before so I started thinking how about another kitten? Thanks for helping me come to my senses. Lol.
