For a couple years now, I've been interested in a position at a refuge in Arkansas that takes in abused and neglected Big Cats and other wildlife, and gives them a home. ( http://www.turpentinecreek.org ) I've applied twice so far (most recently in November), without much luck. I did make the first cut last time, and I got an interview, but I didn't end up getting the position. The new deadline for applications is April 15th. The positions last 6-7 months, and this one would start in August.

So, after being turned down twice already, and seriously doubting whether I should even bother trying again (They prefer Biology-related degrees, and mine is in English), I've decided that I'm going to drive to Arkansas (it's almost 900 miles from Michigan) and turn in my resume in person. I hope that will make a decent impression, lol.

Most of the work I'd be doing there would be physical labor, and I'm just as able to feed and clean up after 121 Big Cats as someone with a Biology degree! Plus I'd be able to help out in the office and maybe write some articles or something to help drum up interest and awareness. Most of the people there are using the internship as a means to get into a zoo or something, but I'm there for the experience, though I would hope that that experience would also help me get a position somewhere writing for a nonprofit organization, or perhaps covering rehabilitation/reintroduction efforts elsewhere.

So we're going to be staying two nights ON the refuge, with lions literally in the backyard of the 2-suite B&B :) Awesome! Even if it doesn't help my cause, at least I'll have seen it. But wish me luck anyway, okay? Thanks :)

WOW! SO COOL! That is something I have always wanted to do. I have been obsessed with big cats since I can remember. It would be a dream come true to be able to work with them. I don't have any degree though.
GOOD LUCK!

You can tell I'm from near Detroit... when I saw the topic I thought... who cares about baseball... LMAO

Funny thing is... baseball season isn't here yet!

Sounds like fun, Amber!

Oops. I fixed the link in the original post, I'm sorry.

Hmm... I went to seee the Tigers once, a long while back, before Comerica Park and all... Haven't been back. I do love our mascots, though... Lions and Tigers :) If only the Pistons were willing to change into the Bears ;)
