Hi,

Is it possible to buy a good/healthy cat food at wal-mart? What brand would you reccomend. I've been purchasing food from my vet but I think its a waste of money. The vet must be making huge profit off the sales. So what brand/kind should I get?

Thanks

If you can't afford anything better than buy Purina One or Iams. They are the best you'll find at Walmart. However, if you can afford something better then go to Petsmart or your local feed store and buy something a little better. I find Nutro reasonably priced and it's a good food. Some will say it's not, but compared to Iams, it's much better.

If you've been buying food from your vet, almost anything you buy anywhere else will cost you less. Do you have a pet store near where you live? They should carry some good cat foods at better prices than what a vet will charge. :)

Just look through the threads in this section. There's always a lot of discussion about cat foods. Read them and decide for yourself. :)

I feed my cat regular Friskies cans. I smell the stuff. It's meat. I don't see how that can be unhealthy for my cat, considering she's 17 years old and shows no sign of keeling over.
It smells like meat so that cats will eat it ;) Its really by-products and fillers.

But you are in fact a very lucky owner to have a cat that has survived this long with no ill-effects. This is where genetics plays a large part. Kind of like the people who live to be 110 on a steady intake of booze and cigarettes. Doesn't make it good for you, and one certainly wouldn't recommend it as a proper diet

OK, now I don't know anyone who lives to 110 on a diet of booze and cigs. Isn't that pushing it? HA! HA! I understand what you're saying though. I've lost a mother and 3 sibliings, all under the age of 60, to lung cancer because they all smoked and drank at one time in their life and a couple were still doing it at the time they became ill. Two brothers had given up the booze and alchohol 10 years prior and still developed the lung cancer. That's a perfect example of how genetics play a huge part in our health. I quit smoking 13 years ago and from time to time wonder if I will end up developing the lung cancer anyway. Time will tell.

I had my cats on Iams thinking it was good stuff. The younger one [4 years old] not too long ago decided that his stomach didn't like the cheap stuff. He just kept on puking it all up. I thought it was just that certain bag of food so I bought another bag, still the same thing. I switched to Eunukeba [i always spell that wrong] from Petsmart and he's been fine ever since. I learned from this forum actually that Iams wasn't very good... I found a petstore [Super Pet] that carries Wellness so I'm going to see if they will go for that.

I've talked to two others that has had cats that were on cheap food and one day, they decided their stomach wasn't going to take it anymore so they switched and they were fine

I think he made it to 100. I don't really think he was a big boozer and those cigars can't be compared to cigarettes by the package. He said he woke up every morning and did sit ups every day of his life. Obviously he took care of himself. My husband has an aunt who is 97 and sharp as a tack. She's in better shape than I am and I'm 50!! I can see how she's kept going so long, her mental attitutude and how she looks at things. Never has a harsh word for anyone or anything. Always sees the good in everything. Also has always taken care of herself by eating right, never smoking and drinking very, very little alchohol. Those who study longevity say it's the mental attitude that plays a major role in how long you live because worry and stress will kill you quicker than anything or else bring on disease and illness that will get you.

If Eukanuba works....dont change!
I have a Boxer with Colitis and Eukanuba has come recommended
more times than I can count for sensitive stomachs.
I dont know what it is about it??? :?
Right now he is under control....but if he flares up to bad again
we will be switching to Eukanuba.
