Today marked the day that Googles 'Street View' went live in the UK.

Want to see my neighbourhood?

This is my local area - and in fact that nightmare of a road I have to cycle at the very beginning of my trip to work.

This is where I work

Our old home. I bet we lived here when this snapshot was taken. We had the ground floor flat. You notice the windows open at the front? Thats flatmates old bedroom. He used to drive me nuts leaving those windows open all the time for Toby to hop out of. In the end, he kept his door shut when he went out as a compromise. The only way you could get in is though the wooden gate you just about see to the side .. we had to walk though the garden to get to the front door at the back of the house.

This is the outside of my current house. I assume we hadn't moved in yet when this was taken :D

CCTV is, in my view, a invasion of privacy (on the premise you have the right to go about your day-to-day business without being watched on the assumption you 'might break the law'), but these aren't live images. They are a series of photographs. You can move around using your mouse and the little map at the bottom corner (and zoom in etc). Peoples faced are blurred out. Car registration numbers aren't shown. Some people suggest that thieves might use the information to break into peoples homes ... but I'm not sure that it gives any valuable information. Yet, I do find such a clear view of my street, and the view of my front door rather disturbing. So, my feelings on the matter are rather mixed.

Thoughts?

I feel like I know you better now that I know where you live :D

I like the idea of Street view overall. I do have trouble with them putting up pictures with kids playing in the front yard of a house.

When you go to my mother's house, you see her standing on the sidewalk - and it is a flattering picture.
When you go my work, you can one of my co-workers driving by - in the Mustang my son sold her son.

A moment in time. It doesn't bother me.

I have no issues with it. What you see on street view is what you'd see looking out the window when driving or walking down the street. I think its neat :)

I guess I'm warming up to the idea. As long as people arent identifiable and that authorities dont try to use it to their own dubious ends. And you can use it to show people your local area, like what I've just done. As most of you come from North America or Australia I thought it would be neat to show you my little bit of England and I had fun doing that. They are only snapsnots of one sunny day after all.

I think that as it's a moment frozen in time then it's not so so invasive but it still feels a bit funny to me! My stepdad saw the cameras when he was in Norwich one day (in fact he was walking behind the camera car so may be a feature!). It's funny (not sure whether funny odd or funny ha ha) that they've hidden where's wally somewhere in one of the UK pictures too!!

Spent quite alot of the day yesterday messing about on it instead of working (although in my defense it was with work colleagues so could be counted as team bonding or something...... :? ).

This is my now home (worryingly front door is wide open - this is not normal!).

This is my old flat:

I think it shows quite well the difference between renting (then) and buying (now!).

Unfortunately I work in the city centre which is not on the streetview :(

I'll also remove links in a couple of days - never know who's lurking out there...or more worringly...you do 8O

Apparently its been covering areas of the USA for quite a while. It was delayed over here because of concerns regarding privacy laws.
