Hi. Mom of Monkeyshines, an 18 month old sweetheart that I found screaming in my hallway, a refugee from the neighbors that don't fix or take care of, in any way at all, the kittens that keep coming. He was the only one of his litter had an URI when I found him and I believe he has FHV, aka feline herpes. He's on Azithromycin now for a URI. He's very prone to them, the poor baby.
I'm here to learn, and help where I can.
I have a million questions and more to say, but this is just a Hello cat folk post.

Welcome! My older cat Freyja is very prone to URIs as well. I started her on Lysine a few months ago and she's done really well so far... Hope to see pics of your buddy soon.

Oh my, I have been awful at corresponding with my all my forum friends!
Amy22, thanks for the welcome! Apologies for not replying sooner.
I heard that Lysine wasn't actually good for FHV. IMO that's what Monkeyshines has, but I had him vaccinated for it so I'll never be sure, but because he was rescued from a hallway. Found out he came from a scummy apt with scummier people, and a lot of poor kittens that never make it past a month or 2 before they die from anemia or URI's. I had to take him!
Right now, I think he might have sinusitis. His sinuses hurt him, he's stuffy, and he's a bit photosensitive. He has dark circles under his eyes which are noticeable because he's a blonde. I'm deathly afraid! My last cat, Skratchy, had sinusitis and was prescribed prednisone for it after antibiotics didn't clear his URI up fully. The prednisone
gave him diabetes which, in turn, caused his kidneys to go into failure. I am afraid of giving my kitty a steroid again. He is not yet two years old!I'm going to buy some bovine lactoferrin. It's supposed to help with everything Lysine does but I'll probably use it with the lysine. So far he has been to three ships for one upper respiratory infection that never goes away 100%. He last took azithromycin, which got him better for about a week and I mean fully better. But that was only a week and as soon as he came off 10 days of Azithromycin he displayed the same symptoms that have been there, on and off, since he was a kitten. It's so frustrating because I can tell he is not comfortable at times, especially with the cold weather. Oh, and he hates the steam heat. It seems to dry him out too much, plus all the popping and hissing and spraying isn't fun for him. He plays, he's fiesty, and when prompted will eat okay. Too much kibble (Heartfull chicken & egg product
for sensitive tummies, with probiotics) but I think it's from not being able to smell his food all the time. Can't change his wet though, too much gluten I fear, but he EATS IT. I have half a case of Halo that he won't touch, so it isn't helping much lol.
Have you read anything on Lysine being bad for cats? I don't have links at the moment but I'll look & post it here for you.
Monkeyshines is a ball of kitty now, but here's another picture of him. Thanks for asking.
Good luck with your kitty

Aww, he is a cutie; looks like a lover. I just looked up the Lysine, looks like you're right. It hasn't really been shown to have much effect (but its not harmful). I hope he feels better soon!

You're so right, he is a lover! Sweetest kitty I've ever had, he stole my heart easily.
Lysine was only tested on cat cells, not the actual animal. Now that they've done more research they found it wasn't helping FHV. A lot of people are trying both Lysine and bovine lactoferrin, with very good results.

Did your kitty have a URI when you first got him/her? I think that's an indicator of FHV.

Let's keep each other informed. I'm brand new here, but so far I've only "talked" to you. Hopefully I'll find more people but I'm here to learn & help.

Good luck!!
