Hi everyone!!
New member here. I have a stray cat that’s been hanging around and trying to see if it’s a male or female. I’m not sure if this picture is helpful. Due to our current pandemic situation I’m a little leery of the cat because I’m not sure where he’s going all day. I plan once this craziness dies down to get it fixed and get shots for it. I think someone abandoned it. It’s pretty friendly. If anyone could help, I’d be appreciative!!

Wellnow, black cats are tricky to photograph, but to me that looks like a boy cat - and it also looks like it's already been fixed. If not, you'd likely notice Tom Cat smelll as he'd be marking the territory. If you're not smelling that, you've likely got yourself a fixed male cat there. Others may have different opinions... I'm not an expert.

I know what you mean about "where has he been", but you can pet and stroke him to make him comfy with you and wash well when you stop. Are you feeding him?

Thank you for the input eldercat!! I was thinking he's a male but wanted reassurance. I'm not too familiar with checking on their sex. I am feeding him, as I can't stand to see an animal hungry. I haven't smelled any sort of smell outside. He's a sweet friendly cat, I've just been scared to pet him as I don't think they know a whole lot about the virus and animals and he's out exploring the neighborhood all day. I do chat with him frequently he knows to expect food as every morning when I open my door he's meowing for it Had we not already been in this crazy situation he'd have already been to the vet and made part of our family. My daughter goes out and chats with him too, she's very excited to let him come inside. I've already bought a litterbox and good seresto flea collar for him. Praying this situation comes to an end soon for all of us!!

You might want to check quite thoroughly about where he is supposed to be, who he belongs to in your area - there might be another little girl in a different house who would be so sad if you adopted her cat! But cats do sometimes decide where it is that they will live - I've been on both ends of that. Can you tell if he's been wearing a collar in the recent past? There would be hair loss around his neck where the collar rubbed the fur.
