The cat I just adopted has some sort of gastrointestinal problem. Straight to the point, his poop smells incredibly horrible. It's so bad I have a hard time changing his litter. He also goes a lot more than an 8 pound cat should, I think?

The vet initially gave us some oral medication to clear up a diahhrea problem (worked) but it's still horrible smelling. Any ideas?

PS...this is not a joke. It's a serious question.

Two ideas for you. One, you could invest in one of those automatic litter boxes. It's a hard plastic box with an electric rake that is triggered 10 minutes after kitty does his business and it drags the clumped waste into a plastic container and resets itself. Idea two, air fresheners and popery. Plug your nose until your cat is better. Have you talk to your vet about this? Maybe some of the other members have some ideas for you. It could be the food. What kind of food do you give him? Sure, catpoop smells bad, but there´s bad and then there is really really bad and if it smells really really bad the smell is most probably caused by the food the cat eats.

It could be a bacterial superinfection. I'm a nurse and bacteria in the poop has a distinct smell (very nasty even I gag). So does blood in stool. Blood smells so nasty. I'm sure you brought this up to the vet? What did she say to do? What was his original diagnosis? Food definately could do it but it shouldn't be that untolerable. Try changing the litter more often. Do you have a weak stomach to smells as it is? Let us know the anaswer would help big time.

Turns out he did have that bacterial infection. The vet gave us some medication for him to take orally, and he seems to be over it now...thank God. It was getting bad there for a while!
