You didn't mention if you are getting a kitten or a cat. I understand that kitten food contains more fat for growing cats and even though the kitten food bag may say for kittens up to 1 year, I was told to switch to adult cat food after 6 months, unless the cat is on the skinny side and needs to gain weight.
I feed my cat at 9 am and 8 pm (1/4 cup of dry food each time) and a spoonful of canned food at around 6 pm.
As far as having a loving cat, how old it is and how it was brought up are factors. Most of the time, if you bring up a cat (from a kitten) with love and attention it will come to know that, and even expect it. Cats that were brought up in a home without much love and affection (or a stray) may not be so accepting of the affection and handling, at least not at first.
If you are getting a kitten, consider getting 2. Your kitties will always have each other for company when nobody is home. I wish I had done that 3 years ago.
Good luck, enjoy your new family member and welcome to the forum!
