So,,,,,,2 weeks ago I adopted a 3 YO male cat. He was 'advertised' as good with cats, kids, small dogs. Since he has arrived at my house, he is hiding in the closet. He hisses at me whenever I go to speak to him. Now he has started growling at me. I have tried Rescue Remedy and Cat Nip. He actually pee'd all over what I sprayed with cat nip!

I am trying very hard to keep this guy and everyone tells me to be patient. I keep thinking that one more week in the closet and he is going to start going backward and become more unsocialized! I talk to him, I give him treats, he is using the litter box and eating but I am concerned that this is a bad living situation for him.

I would welcome any advice.

Seems like you have a lot going on in your house! Sounds like he needs some quiet time to adjust. Maybe just let him stay in his closet a bit until he gets more used to everything? I recently took in a stray that is afraid of everything and had taken up residence under a curio cabinet. I put his litter box, food and water dishes in the area so he doesn't have to go far, which made him feel safe. There happened to be some toys in the area ( I have other pets), and after a few days he started playing with them (although mainly at night when everything is quiet). He seems to be coming out more in general to interact with my other pets, which is also good. Sounds like you might have a shy guy as well. He'll get there :)
