Hi all, I hope someone might be able to help. We have 2 cats - a 10 year old male tabby and a 6 year old female mixed oriental. They have lived together for 5 years in 3 different flats with me and my husband. I am writing about my the female (Miso). We got her from a charity when she was about a year old, she was found on the street (can’t believe that!) She was ravenously hungry always asking for food when we first got her, the vet said to leave all the food down to let her eat what she wanted and she’d eventually vomit, eat, vomit, etc until she got the idea and would eat a normal amount. Well, that never worked because she never vomited and she just gained a lot of weight! What we eventually found worked best was to feed her 3 times a day which was manageable since I worked from home and if me or my husband weren’t home she was fine with a morning and evening feeding.

Our cats are indoor cats, they get lots of love and attention. The other cat (Rocket) we got when he was 3 months old and we had for 4 years by himself before we got Miso. When Miso first joined our cat family, Rocket was intimidated by Miso and she was top cat until eventually there was a power dynamic shift and he became too cat(he is physically bigger than Miso.)They have never been best buddies, they are more like tolerant flatmates, but they will almost always be in the same room together. Before we moved, it was clear Miso was trying to take to cat again but was losing. She would cry the hallway as if to say she was upset she was losing.

Fast forward to this year, we had to stay at my in-laws for 6 weeks in between moving and the cats were confined to 1 room for that time. It was not ideal but we didn’t have a choice. The cats got along fine except the last 2 weeks were challenging! They started to get into fights again. Nothing too big, but like I said we did our best.

We’ve been in our new place for over 2 months and Miso has not settled yet. She is constantly pacing, she’s always been a light sleeper but not to this extent. She starts asking for food earlier and earlier. It got so bad that I stated giving her snacks between meals but that didn’t work, and when I finally realized she was eating to confort herself, I stopped doing that.

I took her to the vet last week and the vet recommended a medication to help calm her, feeding the cats separately, paying attention to her first when entering the room, keeping them separate at least temporarily. All of that has helped but Miso is still asking for food early and is restless. She hyper conscious of Rocket, when he enters the room, etc. both will pick fights with the other.

These cats have never been best buddies, but they’ve gotten along, it doesn’t make sense why all of a sudden they have to be separated so much. I spoke to the vet yesterday and he didn’t have anything else to advise and recommended an expensive cat shrink! I don’t have money for that!

If anyone has advice or additional things to try I’d super appreciate the help! We can’t keep them separated or Miso medicated forever, this isn’t sustainable!

If the physical went ok and the Dr thinks it’s stress / anxiety related from changes in its normal environment then staying on the anti anxiety medication can work wonders. I had two cats ( one passed 6 months ago ). I am left with a 15 year old female whose vocalizing has increased with age , especially after her brother passed and me moving to different places for my work contracts ( which we will be doing again next month ). Some cats just get more anxious and stressed then others. Mine is currently on an anti anxiety medication and I am so happy on how it has helped her anxiety. She doesn’t talk non stop in that high pitch meow all day and night anymore. Stays out more and just seems happier. I was told the medication can take months to see any difference and sometimes just doesn’t work. Well I seen a difference in my cat about two weeks later and by one month a huge difference. I actually give it to her every other day instead of every day. But when I tell you I can sleep all night now it just has been wonderful. So if your dr prescribed it. Give it time to kick in. It might just take a couple months to see any difference. One of the employees at that drs office said it tokkk 3 months for her to see the difference in her cat. I guess I got lucky maybe !
