as far as i know, healthy cats rarely have bad breath that you can smell when they open their mouth

obviously his teeth are not the problem

i would wonder if there was a malabsorption problem, meaning he digests the food ok but it is not absorbed properly
of course if this is the case, over time you would see some other signs of vitamin defiecency or whatever

the only cat i had with really bad breath had kidney disease, which can cause truly horrible bad breath, but also mouth ulcers etc

5 mos old kittens rarely (if ever?) get kidney disease
so i would want to know if there was something going on in the GI tract

maybe you could just call your vet and say, hey, is this normal? or something i should be concerned about?
as long as you do not have a vet that will take your money for no good reason, you should be able to trust that if it needs to be checked out they will tell you
afterall, they have seen a lot more cats than i have!

good luck

Bad breath can be caused by different things, not just necissarily plaque build up on the teeth. Some cats have stronger smelling breath then others naturally, and sometimes it can be the beginning of a problem.

A trip to the vet for an exam, including a dental exam is a good idea.

I hope it's nothing serious! :)
