Hey Catman and Mods,
I started this thread just a day or two ago and it's gotten a great response, but some of the folks would rather see it on a separate forum topic so they don't have to sift through every single response to find what might be helpful to them.

Not sure if it's possible or not, but if you would consider it, I'd be most appreciative. If it's not possible, would this topic warrant being a sticky??

Thanks!

Actually, this would be catman's decision, but the problem I see with it is that there would be no reason to place an ad here if we were already promoting products at no charge. Also, we might bear some responsibility if some of the products were "knockoffs," as Dr. Jean said.

Hmm, I don't see how we are promoting anything more than we already are. Each one of us is constantly recommending products we use here on the forum and we always talk about where we get them, etc.
We were just thinking it would be better to have one location where we could say...

"Hey, I bought the litter locker at Petco today while they were having a 30% off sale. The sale doesn't end until next week, incase your interested."

Jeanie, could you point me in the direction of the comment you referred to by Dr. Jean and "knock-off" product liability, I must have missed that.

Also, where are there ads on the forum? I haven't seen any. Or is this something that Catman is currently working on doing?

Just a caution about buying Frontline, Advantage, etc. over the internet instead of from your vet: there are a lot of counterfeit versions out there. If you think the price is too good to be true, it probably is!

I recently read an article about how to tell the real ones from the fakes; I'll try to find it and post the clues. Something like the real ones have a date and lot number stamped on every individual dose, there's a notch where you're supposed to open it, and a couple of other things...

Advantage in particular is only *legally* available through veterinarians. The online companies get their supplies by convincing a bunch of individual vets to buy "extra" and sell it to them for a small profit. It's not ethical; and I have reported companies to Bayer who tried to solicit me into that scheme. However, I have used online pharmacies to *prescribe* meds and they did call me back to confirm the prescription.

Anyway, just be careful!

Cheers,
Dr. Jean

Thank you for responding so fast, Jeanie.

Ya know what? I don't have any ads on the top of this page. Honestly.
The only thing on the top of my page is the little kitty picture on the left.

Then it says, The Cat Forum, forums all about our cats...

Do the rest of you guys see banner ads? I've yet to see one.

I've never seen any banner ads on this forum.

I think a forum for HOT DEALS would be fantastic. Because one week a site may offer free shipping or reduced prices, and i'd LOVE to hear about it in a timely manner.

Like a good sale on DaBird or something with free shipping. Or medicaton, or anything else.

just my 0.02cents :p

There are links like this at the top of each page. I assume someone is paying for them. I have not asked catman the results, but I was approached by a business person regarding the purchasing of space, and referred her to catman. Many people join only to advertise their products, and receive a similar notice from one of the mods.

They are very discreet. At the top of the page under the options (FAQ, Search, etc.) there is a small rectangular box, generally with 2 links in it, ie, Bengal Cats Available. These change from page to page. They are not obnoxious, however, as with so many other sites.

Here are the latest two:

Diatomaceous Earth On Sale Today Save 10-15% Now On Featured Items

There have been ads like this for at least the last six months, maybe more. I assume, since catman is the owner of this site, that they have purchased space. They're almost always cat related, and often offer cats for sale. As I said, I have not asked catman. I could be wrong.

I doubt that you are wrong. It makes perfect sense and you do see those on most websites similar to this one.

It's just strange to me that I am not seeing them.

I wonder if it has anything to do with which way you set your profile to view the forum..like that sub-silver thing??

:?

OK - I finally see where the ads are - but they change if I set it to subsilver or the other one.

I don't think of it so much as advertising - but helping each other out. Many people find buying many different 'premium' foods expensive and if we can let people know where it is cheaper more people are likely to try it for their cats. Also if I seen an advert for a food/toy or anything else I didn't use usually - I wouldn't buy it just because it was on special offer.

It is well known that many people feed their cats certain brands and I would love to be able to say - hey everyone in this area - I have just seen this at $2 off... etc.

If you use the subsilver theme, it is ad free.
See picture:

If you use the fisubsilver theme (the defualt), it has ads.
See picture:

I personally use fisubsilver, as I think it looks a lot better and I don't really find the ads intrusive.

I personally just want to know where I can get the best deals for the food I buy and free shipping..it's hard to find that when you google it, I want a recommendation from someone on a site like this but from members I've seen post and said things I trust. Is that possible on this site or open this site up to be abused....
