There must be a million books on Cats most with beautiful pictures but that's about it. How about fav cat authors..those who think they truly understand the nature of the house cat then try and spell it out for us humans, whats in your personal library?

Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown. (Sneaky Pie is a tabby cat)
http://www.ritamaebrown.com/content/index.asp

The Mrs. Murphy series:
http://www.ritamaebrown.com/content/books_mm.asp

The Sister Jane fox-hunting series:
http://www.ritamaebrown.com/content/books_ja.asp

The Sister series has only one cat in it, but all of the animals (cat, dogs, foxes, horses and wildlife birds) do speak with one another. The Mrs. Murphy books have the cats: Mrs. Murphy, Pewter and their Corgi dog friend: T-Tucker. Other animals are also featured in various of the novels, mostly an owl, a possum and I think "Paddy Murphy", the tomcat husband of Mrs. Murphy.

All are murder/mystery and I like the genre with the added attraction of having animals as main characters that influence the outcome of the stories.

Are we talking just novels? Or can it be true stories?

Personally, seeing what my favorite forum contributors read or use as reference
will certainly be helpful and fun. I read the below review, it was short and really regarding the subject, to the point and meant something but made me want to search more....that's when I thought this forum would be the best place to find those *interesting reading suggestions. Just good books about our favorite most mysterious friend(s),it's an open thread.

Im a book junkie. I love to read. I love all animals and there are a lot of dog books popular right now but not cat books. A relaxing Saturday is going to the used book store and buying a ton of books esp on cats. I went thru my bookshelf of the current books on cats Ive read. I tend to read lighter stuff about cats since so much of my life is cats in crisis.

Photo books I love are:

My all time favorite cat books are by Shirley Rousseau Murphy. There are the Joe Grey mysteries (Joe is a feline detective) and also The Catsworld Portal.

Merry, I think your list is going to take me back to Amazon again. Dr. Pitcairns Guide to Natural Health just came in the mail this week along with the Cat Owners Home Veterinary Handbook by Eldredge, Carlson, Carlson and Giffin. (3 Vets, 1 MD). Haven't had the time to really get into them yet.

My guilty pleasure-

The Warriors Series, by Erin Hunter
It was written for a younger audience, but it is an enjoyable read, all about "forest" cats. There are a ton of books, and if you're like me and in love with the characters, that is a good thing!

XD such a dork I am

THE CAT WHO series,by Lilian Jackson Braun. What makes it funny is that Koko and Yum Yum are somewhat human, and Qwilleran is somewhat of a cat. The Cat who went to Paris...is that the newest edition?
There was a short story, actually I seem to remember it from high school english lit, about a cat who gets revenge on a human who killed his cat-sweetie. He hangs out on the cat-haters windowsill, until enraged, the guy lunges, and falls out of a 6 story window. The kicker is-in the wake of the deed, the cat just saunters off. That's a cat.

The Cat Who Went To Paris- First book
A Cat Abroad- second book
The Cat Who’ll Live Forever by Peter Gethers- 3rd book

I found each one in a used book store. Ive even reread them because they are written with such a sense of humor and you fall in love with his scottish fold, norman. I think they were written in the late 90s.

ooo...great thread.

For behavioural type books I quite like Vicky Halls (though she can seem a bit preachy!). Her latest offering is The Complete Cat. She also has a monthly newsletter which I've signed up to.

When I was young I loved the Carbonel series. Amazing books about a little girl with a magic cat - still have my dog-eared copies of the series in my flat :D

I also loved the Pangur Ban series:
