Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find out an adult cat's exact age.

It's easier if they're still kittens. You know if they have their eyes and ears closed that they're under 1-2 weeks of age, that if they have open, blue eyes they're between 2 and 6 weeks of age, that if they have their premolars but no other teeth that they're around 4 weeks of age. You can also estimate based on their size.

Once a cat is an adult, you can really just guess the range based on their health. An adult cat who is overall healthy, fairly active, not suffering from arthritis and probably not missing teeth, you can guess the cat is between 1 and 6 years of age. If the cat is more mature, but still fairly healthy, probably somewhere around 5 to 8 years of age. If the cat is suffering arthritis, they are likely a senior.

To determine your cat's age in human years, you can use a general guideline that equates cat years to human years. The common rule of thumb is:
  1. First two years of a cat's life: Each cat year is approximately equivalent to 12 human years.
  2. After the first two years: Each additional cat year is equivalent to about 4 human years.
So, if your cat is, for example, 5 years old in cat years, you would calculate it as follows:
  • First two years: 2 cat years * 12 human years = 24 human years
  • Remaining three years: 3 cat years * 4 human years = 12 human years
Total human years: 24 + 12 = 36 human years
Keep in mind that this is a general guideline, and individual cats may age differently based on factors such as breed, genetics, and overall health. Regular veterinary check-ups can provide a more accurate assessment of your cat's age and health status.
