...before heading to the vet?

I was home sick yesterday and MowMow seemed fine all day. We all took a nap together in the early afternoon and when I woke up I noticed he was worrying his foot. He'd shake it and lick it a little every so often.

When we got up I noticed when he would sit down he would hold it up. He wasn't limping on it when he walked. I pulled his toes apart and checked it out which he fought like a lion. He was PISSED I was messing with it. I saw a little red spot between his toes but no open wounds, abscess looking stuff or dirt.

This morning he was still holding it up but he's getting around ok. He let me stroke his paw but when I tried to manipulate his toes he got pissy with me. I'm not overly worried since I don't see a sore. I'm assuming that he just pulled or strained something since he's walking fine and i doubt the vet can do anything..

I guess I'm just looking for validation on NOT taking him to the vet. Am I being an awful mom not taking him because I don't see anything wrong with the paw? (it's not swollen and doesn't feel hot either).

I did lock Book up today so they wouldn't chase each other around and hurt it worse and I kept carrying MOwMOw around so he wouldn't jump up and down off stuff last night.

If there's a little red spot, my guess is that he's got something stuck in his paw - something too small or fine for you to see, but still big enough to be irritating to him. I've had plenty of splinters and barbed hairs that come off of some prickly weed around here stuck in my fingers, and they drive me crazy until I manage to get them out.

If MowMow hasn't worked it out in the next day or two, I'd suggest taking him to the vet to see if he can figure out what's causing the irritation and remove it.

I don't know if this will help, but when Muffs was a kitten she did something to her paw (don't know what). She would hold it up, refusing to put any weight on it, and she was limping. I called the vet and they said chances were it was a minor sprain, which they couldn't really do anything for. They said if I saw any other signs (loss of appetite, overall lethargy, etc.), or if it was still a problem after 3 or 4 days, I should call them back and make arrangements to bring her in, but otherwise just keep an eye on her and it should go away on its own.

Well, Muffs was only about 3 months old and I was a Nervous Nelly. So, I ended up taking her to the vet. He examined her and said it was a mild sprain and there was nothing he could really do, but it would get better on its own in a few days. He chuckled when he said that (his way of saying "I told you so")...and no doubt he chuckled even more when he cashed my cheque! :smile: Sure enough, about 3 days later, Muffs was fine.

I hope MowMow is feeling better soon.

P.S. I missed the part about the red spot...can't comment on that!

When I get home tonight I'll pin him down and get a good look at it. When I tried yesterday he was SO upset I was trying not to make it worse but now I want to know what's going on. He gets *SO* freaking grouchy about stuff like that and even though I can kiss his head, laugh at him the way he carries on with hissing and growling and howling at me it's like he's got murder on his mind. Then he SULKS for hours.

I borrowed the magnifying glass from work, I'll try to see if he's got anything in there.

Doran's done similar things a few times. With him it's usually because he's tried to sample something sticky and it's gotten stuck into his fur between his toes really good. I've had to wash his naughty little paws many times...if only he wouldn't sample with his paw!

I think you should keep an eye on it, maybe put a little polysporin on it. If it gets worse take him in, it could cause an abcess. If it goes away, well, no biggie. But check it a few times a day, followed by a nice treat for the brave boy of course.

Thank you so much for asking! He is still favoring it a little when he sits but no more licking it and there are no marks on it... he seems to be healing. I'll still keep an eye on him though, just to be sure.

We seem to be on the mend now. He still favors it a bit when he sits. I can see him putting the majority of his weight on his back pad and not on his toes.

There's no mark in between his toes and he lets me handle his foot as long as I don't squeeze his toes. I guess he must have just strained something. He probably hurt it hitting SHepherd on the head...it's a pretty thick skull...

When I left this morning he was just fine. In fact, I think the little monster might have been playing me. For days I've been lifting him on and off of surfaces so he wouldn't hurt his poodie ... until last night anyway. He was moving in on my turkey so I shooed him away. Then he sat and held up his foot looking all pathetic but... it was the WRONG FOOT!

In retaliation I was forced to chase him down and flip him over so I could tickle his fat. Then he went all nuts racing around the apartment and diving off furniture. I think he's just fine now.

OMG what a BRAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am laughing so hard I have tears in my eyes....wrong foot hahahahahaha

What on earth would we do without our critters?? LOL
