There are very few dry foods that don't use meals. It's just the nature of the beast. Ingredients are list in order of weight...when a food lists chicken then chicken meal, the vast majority of the protein is coming from the meal anyway because once you remove the water from the chicken, there is very little dry matter left and it actually falls to much lower on the ingredient list.
Halo is a food that doesn't use meal, but the second ingredient is pea protein. Remove the water from the chicken and I'd bet the majority of the protein in the food is coming from vegetable sources especially since it's a concentrated source...pea protein vs peas.
I'd feed a high quality food like NV with meal over Halo any day.
