Has anyone had any experience with feline hyperthyroidism? My 14-15 year old cat was just diagnosed with this condition, and I'm looking at 2 main treatment options: medication or surgical removal of the affected thyroid lobes. Sassy also needs a teeth cleaning and a lump on her shoulder needs to be removed, so she'll already be under anesthesia. We're leaning towards surgical removal but would appreciate any thoughts or opinions.

There are actually *three* treatments: medication, surgery, and radioactive iodine. They all have their plusses and minuses, and not all are available in all areas. For more details, see:

The medication (methimazole) must be given for at least 2 weeks prior to *any* other treatment, and bloodwork repeated at that time, in order to make sure her kidneys can handle it. I usually start them on the drug and watch them for a month or two before proceeding to the next step.
