Hi I need help, a week ago my cat was spayed. After a while we discoverd a hard lump the size of a large marble were she had the incision. We talked to the vet and he said that it could be either a reaction to the dissolving stitches, or a hernia.. My question is how do you tell the difference? What should I do?? When is it safe for her to play with the second large male cat that we have?

The fat and tissue around the incision will become inflamed from the surgery and the presence of sutures, and will form a firm "ridge" over the incision within a few days post-op. This should diminish in 2-3 weeks and ultimately disappear. This is most likely what it is.

However, the safest course is to have the vet check it. I always did this for free when owners were concerned. I'd rather take 30 seconds and look at it, than not see it and have something go wrong.

Cheers,
Dr. Jean
