I have a 1yr+ female organe tabby named Salem in a quite LARGE two bedroom apartment in the city.

It is looking like we are getting a new kitten. A all black 8 week old male. We are getting him tested/shots etc before being introduced.

I just thought I would ask for some tips etc on introducing a new kitten to a household that already has a cat. I want my present cat, love her to death, to be happy. Period. Top priority. But I am going to work now for and 8 - 9 hour day on a regular basis, my girlfriend will be shortly... I thouht introduce while young and give her a friend to play with during the day. We have always wanted another kitten and since my girlfriend will be home for almost 3 weeks straight, we thought this the perfect time.

And we fell in love with "Kettle", the little black kitten.

Salem and Kettle. Sounds nice don't it ;)

start here:
an article on Little Big Cat called "Base Camp -- How to Prepare for your New Cat"

http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?a ... yournewcat

Error on the side of taking too much time to introduce your cats, rather than too little time. Go very slowly, plan on at least a few weeks of housing the kitten (and having it vetted) before you even consider letting your resident cat lay eyes on it.
Completely desensitize your resident cat the the scent of the kitten before you even consider a (short) introduction.
There are many useful methods of desensitizing cats to each others scents on the net.
I'd be happy to forward the article I have to you if need be.

Also, some people find the use of "happy cat pheremones" to be quite useful, especially if one of the cats leaves for a day or 2 for a vet visit and comes back smelling unfamiliar. Vets in zoos have good experiences using the pheremones with big cats as well, so it's a tool that should be considered, in my opinion.
