10cats and Lakotawolf both shared great informative articles on why fish might not be good for cats.

But what about humans?
I know the seafood industry (particularly the processing segment) doesn't always have our health in mind.

But fish, shrimp, lobster, crab, OCTOPUS, all this wonderful stuff! A health THREAT? What if you buy it fresh?

I'm a fish lover...:sad:

I LOVE seafood too! However I don't eat it every day, maybe once a week, or every two weeks...
I try and find fresh seafood, fish, shrimp, crab, etc...
The smaller the fish, is usually the safest, as you go up in size, since each bigger fish, often eats the smaller fish, the more concentration of 'bad things' will be in that fish...
I stay away from any 'farmed' fish...to many contaminants...
You also have to be very careful about the labels!
They are finding many fish, mislabeled! You think you're buying salmon, and it's actually some other fish, for example!

People, on a whole, are much better at processing fish/seafood...
Cats, aren't! In spite of all the ads, fish is not, a part of a cats natural diet!
If you add in all the contaminates, mercury, radiation, etc, it's a bad thing for cats, their systems are so sensitive to things like that...

I'm not going to give up seafood, I just try and be as smart as possible...

I eat fish and feel the health benefits out-weigh the down-side. I've had cats who have caught fish and so don't feel it is totally unnatural. I don't eat farmed fish either - but I also don't eat meat that isn't free range or eggs either.

If you eat a LOT of fish every week, you can start worrying about the negative health effects. Seafood is good for you, and the health benefits outweigh the costs, especially if it is replacing another meat in your diet.

Ditto what everyone else has said.

I use this guideline when I buy us fish: SeaChoice
It is a Canadian specific guide, and I don't agree with all of their labeling (We've pretty much stopped eating salmon due to the over fishing, problems with farmed salmon, diseases in both wild and farmed, and ecological impacts of both wild and farmed), but it's mostly pretty good. Also, the supermarkets have labels on the fish they sell, so it makes it really easy to pick more sustainable and enviro friendly fish.

Mostly we stick to whitefish (Tilapia, cod) and trout. We eat fish maybe once a month, so the mercury content matters a bit less to me...but it's still part of the reason I try to avoid salmon and tuna.

*I avoid tuna the most because of how over fished it is. People really just need to stop eating it for a while, IMO.
