Is it safe to cut out dry food "cold turkey"?

Hi everyone! So... I plan out my wet food for the kitties well, and always have enough to last the week and then some. However, I forgot to pick up dry food and didn't realize there wasn't more in the cabinet (could've sworn I had half a bag left! lol)

Long story short, I was too lazy to run to the pet store yesterday since I cleaned all day for my grandparents and was exhausted. So Ellie and Tootsie have been without dry all day yesterday, and now today as well.

Of course they're both acting like they are starving to death. Ellie is laying by the area where her dry used to be and just staring, then coming and mewing at me. They've eaten their first serving of wet food and now just keep going looking for more food, only to find an empty plate haha.

They usually only get 1/4-1/2 cup a day (to share between them both), and then are fed about 4.5oz (9oz altogether, 4.5 for each cat) of wet each a day, split in 3 servings. This may seem like a lot of wet considering they also get dry, but keep in mind they tend to waste a lot of the wet. Certain times they gobble it up, other times it just sits and gets licked.

Do you think it's fine to just cut them off from dry altogether, instantly, like I inadvertently did? Or should I buy another bag today and just slowly wean them off? The only thing I worry about is making sure they're both eating enough. Tootsie is 6 months old, Ellie is a year and a half old. Some days Ellie would eat more dry, other days Tootsie would, and the other would eat more wet. But sometimes Ellie just licks the gravy of the wet and walks away, so I worry one is eating too much while the other isn't enough. They both like grazing on their wet food, so it's hard to see who is eating what at a time.

Thanks! :D Sorry for typing a book about dry food... haha I tend to over-worry!

Thanks MowMow! :D I'm thinking that may be best as well, but not going to lie... it kills me seeing them so sad haha! My boyfriend has reassured me that they are fine and get fed plenty... so I think they will survive. Also, it will be nice saving the money from not having to buy the dry anymore!

Dry food is like kitty "krack"..... If I remember correctly, I did it cold turkey with Artie...It was tuff at first and I had to be strong, but he did come around. He was at a point where he was eating and wanting more dry than wet. Wet is so much better for kitties...
I think cold turkey is the best for dry food...
Wet food is a different story..changing to a prescription takes much longer and is a slower integration....
trust me...Artie is soo fussy as far as food is concerned.. nothing else---just food.

So far, the process has been taken well! The wet food is no longer being wasted, woohoo! Although I must admit, seeing them clean their plates and then look up at me like "where's the rest?!" breaks my heart slightly haha. Is 5.5oz-6oz of wet per cat enough for a day? Or is it more about the calories?

Thanks, Artiesmom! :D Yes, dry food is definitely kitty crack! My Ellie is also very fussy about food... Tootsie will eat anything, but Ellie is my difficult one. Luckily she seems to be doing well so far!

I think it's more the crunch of it that they seem to like. Eliminating it will be fine, and frankly better for them. They may miss the crunch and if that is the case pick up a small bag of high quality dry and use it as a treat - much like you would the calorie laden treats, except it's good for them food.
Thank you, Marcia! :D I know it's certainly better for them, and better on my wallet, so better all around! Haha. I may actually do that with dry food, that would be a good reward for their grooming sessions instead of their usual treats! That's a great idea!

M&E,

I think you'll find your kitties eating all of their wet food if the dry is eliminated altogether, so no more $$$ wasted, hopefully. I also tend to think wet food is more filling than dry, as it contains more moisture. Guess you'll find out the evidence from scooping the boxes! ;)
TabbCatt, thank you! :D And that is exactly what I'm thinking - and seeing so far! The wet is actually being EATEN! Haha. I'm so used to seeing wet leftover for hours, that now when they clean the plates instantly I'm shocked!
