I have a 5 yr old neutered male cat who will not stay inside. It wouldn't bother me except he has become a mass murderer. Fletcher will throw himself against a window until the screen breaks in order to get out. He waits on the other side of the door for someone to come home so he can sneak out. Then he goes out and kills every bird and/or small animal he can find. He'll even climb trees to eat entire nests.
I've invested in many types of toys and climbing posts to try to keep him occupied, but I now feel like I just provided him with his own
"kitty boot-camp" to train him for the outside world.
I'm really losing my mind; any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

has he always been an inside & outside cat but just now acting like this? maybe he never really killed anything and now once he has tasted blood so to speak he can't wait to get more and its driving him crazy being cooped up inside.

Maybe...if he is not fixed. Usually will you get them nutered, it calms them down a lot and makes them less of a wanderer. Plus if he starts being an indoor cat more, you can de-claw him so he'll find it harder to climb, catch and kill little animals.

My cat Sampson had this issue with darting out the door and I cured it by using a couple deterrents. If I was coming through the front door and saw him near the door I'd shake my keys or toss them to make a loud noise. The noise would usually scare him away from the door.

Second, if I saw him near the door when someone else was about to enter it, I kept a squirt gun handy and would give him a quick blast on his butt. It was enough to make him run the other way.

Sometimes to satisfy his urge to go out, you can try taking him out on a lead and harness that way you can watch him while he's out there. Although this can backfire and could increase his yearning for the outdoors.

Just a few suggestions.
