We have a very calm little girl and when ever she's left alone she'll retreat to a safe space behind a chair, so we placed a small cat cave in this space to give her a better space to rest. Then when we return she'll emerge purring cheerfully.

I've witnessed this behaviour before with big cat cubs on the television, it helps them to survive/avoid attacks from predators when the adult isn't there to protect them.

Have any of you witnessed this with your own cats as kitten and how long until they generally grow out of it?

She may never "grow out of it". She feels cosy and secure in her cave. One of my cats like to be covered by a blanket to rest, my other cat doesn't care one way or the other.
