Hi. This is my first post, and our first kitty.


My girlfriend and I looked at some kitty play pins the other day.. The big jungle jym carpet covered things? not sure what you would call it.

The question is how do we know she will like this? They wanted $150-$250 for a good looking one.. if we buy it and she (Marla) doesn't like it that's a lot of money wasted right?
She likes getting up on high places. She naps on the table sometimes, climes all the way up the back of chairs, and even jumps about 4 foot at the door trying to get the peep hole.

She is 6 months old (5lbs) and inside all the time.

Is this a good idea? What do we look for when buying this jungle jym?

My guess is that she'll love it. Cats love to climb and love soft places to lie down. I think she'll feel safe and comfortable. I wish I could afford one for my cats! They use the highest psrt of my computer desk and a long fireplace mantel as hangouts.

Most cats enjoy have a cat tree around and it's a good tool to use to teach her where she is allowed to scratch. Four out of my five cats love their kitty tree and the thing looks like it's been through a storm with half the carpeting shredded off.

don't know your location, but if in US and OK with online shopping you can save about 50% getting a kitty condo/cat furniture on ebay.

I was worried to about them not liking it, so I got a scratching post first, even before I got a cat. I ended up getting a kitten and she wasn't interested in it at all at first, probably because it was so much bigger then her. It's a simple 36" post, bottom half covered in carpet and top sisal rope (which most cats love), with big wide base so won't tip over. Try pricing anything 2-3 feet big at a pet store and it's like $100., I got this one for $30., then shipping was almost half the cost because it's weight, solid wood not particle board. So in the beginning she would just look up at it and stare like saying "some day", then about 5 months old she's using that thing to climb and bounce off anything I put it next too. I plan on getting one of those big condo play thingys in a few months, maybe for her 1yr b-day Also, if you have a Walmart near you, the small scratch pad w/play ball you see in pic was only like $5-6. and is great to move around to places kitty might be using that you don't want them to, like your furniture or carpets :twisted:

jack if you browse over to ebay (search for cat tree, stand, sisal), you'll see the big (5-6 feet tall) play stands will be about $50. to ship anywhere in US, anything more than that is a rip off. All of them come in a couple pieces that you screw together, so they pack em good. I'm sure whatever you get kitty will eventually play wit/sit on sooner or later.

Lori I put some toys on it to make her more interested and wow does it work! She loves that red ribbon, and will chase it when you drag around. Got some stuffed animals that she's just finally starting to play with now, smaller one I'll put on top of post and she'll jump up and carry down in her mouth The black cube on right is a subwoofer, speaker on left - she'll jump from one to post to other back & forth...while that fake plant thingy in white vase had to be put some where she can't get to since she'll tear it apart! :twisted:

Thanks Ralphcor for the ebay tip. I've been wanting something like that for my cats, but always thought that $200 was too much. My mom got one for Yoda (someone gave it to her for free)--it looks like a 4 foot tall tree. Yoda loves it. The windows are high, so she lays on her tree to watch the birds outside. I love the great big ones and think it would be fun for my cats. They always want to be as high off the ground as they can get anyways. What is sisal rope? I've heard of it, but didn't know why cats like it so much.

kittygirl I'm not sure if sisal is a special kind of rope or just what they call it. Before I got my kitty I read a lot of stuff on the net to prepare, and kept seeing the word sisal used to describe scratching posts, so I searched for that in ebay and poof found tons of condos etc.

If you do the ebay thing just be careful and read the whole ad so you know exactely what you are bidding on...and be patient, if you only want to spend say $100. max on something then another $50. max for shipping, don't worry if you're not the winner because the same thing, or at least close to it will be up for auction sooner or later.

Sisal is the rope they use for winding round scratch posts. It's good for cats to sharpen their claws on because it is quite rough. Many pet stores sell it off the roll for people who want to make home-made scratch posts (a cheaper option)!

I just read on e-bay that cats are attracted to the smell of sisal rope, too. :?
