I was wondering if Angel, my cat, should go on a diet. My boyfriend got her for me last Christmas Eve after my cat of 12 years died. He got her from the Humane Society so we aren't sure how old she is exactly, we're thinking about 1 1/2 years old. She was spayed before my boyfriend brought her home. When she got here she was very skinny the first week or two, after that she started gaining a little weight. I haven't figured out if this is because she was spayed or if it's because of what I'm feeding her? My vet has never said anything about her being over weight or anything, but what do all of you think? Angel just has a little pooch belly, it's not like she's so fat she can't walk  Anyway, maybe I can get a picture of her on here by tonight and you could tell from that.
Thanks in advance!

Oh, my!! Posting twice?? I think we give life in prison for that, don't we, catman?

If the vet says she's too fat for good health, don't free feed and buy a diet food-or food for older cats. Give her toys like the laser flashlight that keep her running! Good luck!! (I'll send you a file in a cake! :) )

Kitty on a diet

Hi

We adopted Jimmy (4 yrs old) at the beginning of November. After a couple of weeks we noticed he had put on a bit of weight. Like your kitty, he's not exactly huge, but his body is beginning to look like a little barrell. We asked the vet about it when we took him for his injections. The vet said it's normal for cats to put on a bit of weight at the beginning of winter. He said Jimmy will probably lose it again naturally in Summer.
Maybe your kitty will slim down a bit in summer.

I know I posted the original post a while ago, but I was going to post another one when I remembered I had already posted this one. Anyway, seashell mentioned that their cat gained "winter weight". I got to thinking about that with Angel, but actually she seems thinner in the winter because her winter coat fills her out more. I would ask my vet about this, but I've seen her cats, and to be honest, they are huge! So I think she would tell me Angel looked fine compared to her cats...Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can find the average weight for a 2 year old female cat? By the way, she weighs about 10 pounds. Again, thanks in advance...

Melissa. I think that depends on body type. Your cat looks great to me. As you say, they get a winter coat-if they go outside. Ask your vet the next time you go whether her weight is too much for her structure. :) She's just a Mae West type, not an Anna Nicole! I have one that size at home, and I just watch her diet a bit. Not a diet, per se, just sensible amounts.
