Hi guys!

A couple of weeks ago, a little black cat showed up in the back parking lot of my family's office (we have a family business). When we left the back door open, our new friend walked right in and made herself at home. I keep cat food and a cat condo/bed thing in the office since there are apartments bordering our office on several sides and we often have strays/ferals hanging out in the parking lot. So, our new friend helped herself to some food and started sleeping in the cat condo at night.

She was super thin when I found her and she was wearing two collars. Neither collar had an ID tag, and one of the collars was not a safety collar - very dangerous for the poor girl, especially outside! I brought one of Wintressia's Rogz-brand safety collars to the office and replaced the other two.

I plastered "FOUND" posters everywhere, even on the bulletin boards/community centers of the apartment complexes. I posted on Facebook and Craigslist. I put up the "FOUND" notices in most of the local vet offices (and had her scanned for a chip - no microchip). I put notices in at our local shelter and called in every day. After two weeks or so with no luck finding her owners, I started to get worried for her - she stayed indoors in the office during the day, but was alone outside at night and in the early morning. Our business has a fleet of 12 cars, so there is a lot of car movement out in the back parking lot and I was scared she'd get run over. Our employees all knew she was around and liked her, but it's difficult to keep an eye out for a black cat on asphalt.

So I knew I had a serious decision to make - take her to the shelter, where she had a high chance of being euthanized (our county's shelter has an 10-day max "hold time" for lost pets before they are euthanized, with an average of 4-6 days if the animal does not have ID/a chip) or - keep her. Well, even though I have a chronically ill senior kitty at home who has several medical issues and hasn't lived with another animal in six years, I couldn't let this little lady go to the shelter.

TL;DR I now have my own mini house panther. She is confined to one room at the house for at least another week, when she'll get her second round of vaccinations and will be spayed (if she isn't already - they weren't able to shave her and check at her first vet appt) We will then have a nice, long, slow introduction period to my 18-year-old, Wintressia. Win isn't a full-indoors cat; she lives in the garage these days, but she does come inside often, so I do need to acclimate the two to each other. The new girl is going to be 100% indoors - I didn't have a choice with Win as I got her when I was 16 and my mother wouldn't allow animals in the house. And now, Win is pretty set in her ways and doesn't want to be a full-time indoors cat.

Anyway! I have to admit I don't think I would have adopted a black cat myself if I'd gone to a shelter - I'm partial to tuxedos and classic tabbies. I also definitely wasn't in the "market" for another cat, as I was planning on waiting until after Wintressia died - but I'd recently started wondering out loud to my boyfriend what I was going to do after Win died, as it would be literally the first time in my entire lifetime that I wouldn't have a pet. I'm pretty sure this little girl heard and decided to adopt me!

She is an absolute sweetheart without a mean bone in her body. She is super-friendly and the most "catlike" cat I've ever known! (Wintressia is very doglike in behavior, having been raised by two dogs, more or less...)

And yep, her name is Kohl, like the ancient cosmetic (most commonly seen in depictions of ancient Egyptians). The name works double duty because it's pronounced "coal" and she's certainly dark as coal! (Though my vet thought she was named after Cole Porter when I first took her in... which led to some awkwardness! At least it's more pronounceable than Win's full name...)
