I took some of your ideas and decided to change my cats food from science diet to something healthier.

I purchased Merrick canned food and my cats seem to love it. I also bought chicken soup for cats dry food.

Are these two foods good? They are somewhat costly but it is worth it if they are good.

Also any ideas on feeding them the raw food diet?

Those are excellent choices. I know very little of raw food with the exception that I tried a couple times to give my cats raw meat....no way would they touch it but then again, I didn't try that hard either. Like any change, cats often need patience and time. I'm happy to give my cats quality canned and dry food.

I tried the raw diet and it just didn't work with my gang. I used to have one cat that liked raw fillet steak if I shaved it really thin. It was just a treat for her though. I remember reading how raw feeders gave their cats raw chicken necks. I have no idea where one would get chicken necks except maybe from a butcher shop.

Merrick dry for cats to be released

Merrick is planning on releasing a dry food line for cats. We have been waiting since last year. We check their web site frequently, but it keeps getting postponed to another season. So, we have no idea when it comes out, but we can't wait since our cats love the cat food. Right now they eat Merrick canned food and Nutro Max Cat Chicken dry.
Although our cats do not like all the flavors of the canned food. I hear most cats (and mine) do not like these flavors: Turducken, California Roll, and New England Broil.

They altimate favorite is Thanksgiving Dinner. I haven't tried the brand new flavor Ocean Breeze because I haven't found it in a store yet.

I feed Merrick to both my cat and dog, mixed with a little bit of Wellness dry food and 2X per day.

There's no doubt in my mind that these 2 animals eat a more healthful and well-balanced diet than I ever will! My own eating habits are horrific...it's not unusual for me to go days and days without eating anything.

Of the 7 or 8 premium canned foods I've tried for Ginger, Merricks is the BEST. She eats all of their different formulas including the new "Ocean Breeze". There are chunks of salmon, chicken, shrimp, lobster 8O , turkey, duck, beef, etc, in their formulas and that is very impressive IMO.

Merrick and Chicken Soup are excellent choices :)

I feed Nya and Buddy raw. Most of the time they get a mince up "complete" diet (that has muscle meat, organs, bone and veggies all minced together) but about once a week they get a "meat on bone" meal. Often it's quail, tonight it was chicken necks, as these are the easiest for me to find.

If you have any specific questions about raw, feel free to PM me. I LOVE how it's worked out for my two, as they were rather sickly cats before, and we havn't been to the vets ONCE since the switch!!

merrick and chicken soup is exactly the diet my two are on. Both are in excellent health and very active. They love the merrick (we buy grammys pot pie, turkduckin, and cowboy cookout... all three big hits) and we give the chicken soup only in the mornings (and not a lot as doogie has been getting chubby and sheba doesn't really like dry). It's about .89 for a 5.5 oz can of merrick here, and quality wise, it's worth it. Both have healthy shiny coats and since we've had doogie, his amount of shedding has been greatly reduced (I think b/c of a good diet).

Same here! I feed Chicken Soup dry (and wet occasionally), and Merrick wet. All of my cats, especially fat Minnie, have noticeably lost fat and their shedding has gone down.

Merrick sells variety packs of its cat food. Each pack contains 8 cans, and I think the bulk price is much lower than it would be to buy 8 cans individually.

Merrick canned.......how much does it cost?
Anywhere from .80-1.10 a can in stores. But worth it.

I went to their web site and they are charging $1.87 a can there, in bulk. I went to their store location finder and there are 2 stores not terribly far from me. I called one and the woman also quoted me a cost of $1.87 a can plus 11 cents sales tax and that brings it to $1.98 a can.

Too rich for my blood. :x

I can understand on the web site charging a little high because they offer free shipping and the price probably compensates them for the shipping. But what that women is charging is crazy. She should be able to buy it super discounted and charge just enough to make a profit. Sounds like a greedy person. Well can't say you didn't try. Hope you find something that you like.

Our local pet store just got Merrick's. We bought four of the 5.5 oz cans to see if the cats like them. They were $1.03 each before tax, which is pretty pricey for us. We'll see how they like them.
We normally buy packages of Wellness (12 big cans) or Natural Blance (24 small cans) which are about $20-22 per case. For a case of Merricks (24 small cans) it is about $25, so we'll see if it is worth it. I hate to keep them on the same brand so much, since we mostly feed the Wellness, either turkey or chicken flavor. I just emailed the store owners to see if they could start carrying Felidae or Innova in the future. I used to buy those brands in Austin and we all liked them. (There was a great stored called Bark 'n Purr that had a great selection of foods).

The pricing depends on the store. I can find the large cans for 98 cents which is the cheapest. I don't feed my cats canned food every day so it lasts longer so its worth the money.

I can't feed Innova or Wellness, but cats don't like it and Wellness makes one of them throw up.

It is better to keep a steady diet of the same brand of dry food and a same brand of canned (they don't have to be the same). It could cause diarrhea. I give my cats Innova dry and Merrick canned until Merrick finally comes out with the dry line.

Thankgiving dinner and Grammy's Pot Pie are the most popular, yes they smell good enough to eat, but I am not that brave. Most cats I have heard including mine do not like Turducken and California Roll, which some of the ingrediants like duck are not popular tastes with cats anyway.

I agree on the Thanksgiving dinner but for some reason my cats don't care too much for Grammy's Pot Pie. They also like Turducken...I had not hear duck was not a popular taste with cats, that's interesting. New England Broil is one flavor Tink refuses to eat, so I avoid that one. And we don't do the Cowboy Cut (I think that's the name) one because Tink's allergic to beef.

I was telling my mom of the great ingredients in the food and she told me that if we ever went broke, at least I could share food with the cats. :)

My cats have liked Merrick in the past, but unfortunately, I didn't get to see them eat it because I had to go out of town suddenly. So I instructed the person looking after the cats to feed them the canned food on the last days, since I didn't have enough raw food to last all week. He said they liked it.

I'll be trying it again soon, because I'm switching them to canned food. It's a lot easier to find than organic meat for their raw food. It's less expensive at about $.99 for a 3.2 oz. can, which equals $6-8 a day. Newman's Own Organic is approx. $1.50 a 5.5 oz. can, and Nature's Variety is approx. $1.79 a 5.5 oz. can.
