My cat is gone

I've been going through some very rough times and very depressed. 2 days ago I let her out, then accidentally fell asleep for 8 hours (I thought I'd rest for 5 minutes). It had happened before that she had gone out and not come back for 10 hours, but this long it can't be. I had quarrelled with a very nasty neighbor (cat hater) a week before, and had called the police on them. They may have killed or relocated her, but I don't think this person had help and my cat is impossible to trap by one person alone.

I can't begin to describe how much pain I'm in, that she paid for my mistakes with her life.

Oh, I am SO sorry!! There is nothing worse than having a cat hating neighbor who you don't trust, - except maybe worrying about a lost loved one! I do hope that kitty will return unharmed and happily ever after to be back home!

Years ago, when she was a stray I fed every night in my feeding station, she once disappeared for about 10 days and I was sure another cat hater neighbor I called the police on (after 3 years of harrassment) had killed her. So I don't want to jump to conclusions. If she never returns, I'll never know what happened.

Has she taken off since that time years ago? Have you approached your neighbor to ask if they've seen your cat? A lot of times the evil people who enjoy tormenting or killing animals like to brag about it. Especially if you've recently disagreed.

Cats have no sense of time so they come home when they're good and ready and are completely baffled when you dote on them for having been gone for so long!

I feel for you, I have a feral I feed every night, and when she is not there, my heart just sinks. I thought she was going to die once, and was pretty sure someone poisoned her, by the way she was acting, but she came around. Hopefully, since this kitty is hard to trap, maybe she is just "laying low" because the cat hating (jerk!) neighbor is intimidating her, and she feels threatened. The few times that Arwen, my feral, has disappeared, it was because she was scared. She is terrified of any truck that resembles the animal control truck, which is very similar to the pest control trucks that come around, so she will hide away until they are gone. She is afraid of helicopters too, she will crawl on her belly and go off to hide if she sees either of those two things, and she will shake all over. It's so sad to see. But if I see a pest control truck on my street, I can guarantee she will stay hidden away until it's gone. I hope your kitty turns up. I know exactly how you feel.

Yes, you're right, she does hide out of fear, in the area, sometimes in a very bushy place, and she won't come out if I call her sometimes when she's in that state. Maybe she did come looking for me but I only go downstairs to see if she's there several times a day, so maybe she was afraid of staying there waiting for me and left again...

I am sorry your kitty is missing. I have a feral I feed and I get worried sick when he does not show up for dinner. Every once in a while he disappears for a few days and then shows up like nothing happened. Hopefully your cat is okay and will be back soon. Please let us know.

I don't think it was the neighbor, because the neighbor, unlike in the case of a stray cat, couldn't know beforehand when Niki would be outside, available for trapping, so she wouldn't have been able to arrange for a trapper to come. And Niki would never come with her willingly or be lured with food. My cats get the best treats all the time, so much so that they're not tempted by anything yummy out there. Besides, cat haters around here attack and harrass the feeders more than they hurt the cats. The ones who hurt the cats are the older generations, who were raised in the old school of human supremacy. This neighbor is very young. Regarding killing, around here it's not done because it's 3 years jail time, so they don't risk it. And she couldn't have been poisoned in the water because the strays would've been poisoned too (if she's thirsty outside the house, she drinks there).

Besides, this thread is now in Behavior, which gives me hope because it means someone thinks Niki left of her own volition.

If she's somewhere out there, she'd better never come back home, because she'll be grounded for life.

There are no predators where I live and no dangers for cats. It's also full of feeding stations all around, which Niki knows very well. Unless she was forcibly taken far away, she'll be ok. I don't think she was run over because I would've been told, unless she was run over a few streets from here, which would be very rare.

I can be totally wrong, but my best hunch is she thought I had abandoned her because I came back only 8 hours later, was spooked by something during the night and fled.

I pray that whatever happened, that she's alive and well and that I'll see her again.

Oh no! Best of luck finding her, I'm sure you're imagining worst case scenarios, but stay positive! She will have food out there, and knows the area.

Once Blacky was missing... we'd been going for a walk and sometimes she follows. We got about 5 homes down from our house when a car drove by and she went deeper into the property there since she hates cars. We figured she'd appear a little farther down the road, but she didn't, so we figured she'd gone home... but she hadn't. We couldn't figure out what happened and were looking for her all the next day. Then around 24 hours later my dad was walking by that same house looking for her and out she came. She was moving gingerly; she'd somehow hurt herself -- maybe pulled a muscle -- and so must have been keeping a low profile until she saw my dad. She was fine a week later. But it was just so odd, as she'd only been a few homes away the entire time we were worrying ourselves sick.

I asked the feeder nearest to me, but she hasn't seen her.

I'm going to ask the superintendent of our building to let me watch the tapes to see if Niki left the building that night, I'm hoping he'll agree, he loved Niki, and he always warns me against the danger of cats gettting in the many bomb shelters inside the building and getting trapped in them. Out of fear, they don't whine to be let out.

The super said he thinks he saw her yesterday or the day before waiting for me by the flowers at the entrance as usual. I'm hanging on to this hope.

Anyway, he's taking me in 45' to search the underground bomb shelter of the building, because it's locked now during peace time and he doesn't lend the key. They've been doing repairs there this week, so she may have gotten inside and locked in. It's happened to other cats.

Thank God !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She's back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She was waiting for me by the flowers now. I went down as soon as the super told me he'd seen her there lately. She's a bit dirty, but not particularly hungry, wouldn't eat food, only asked for treats, then seemed to want to go back outside. She's perfectly fine, and hadn't looked so happy in a long time. She's purring on my lap and watching me type this.

Momof7kitties, that's exactly what she's reacting like. She doesn't understand what's all the fuss. She doesn't seem to understand she was gone 3 days.

Now, after having hardly eaten anything for 3 days, I'm going to buy me some restaurant take out.

Thank you all so much for being with me during those horrible days!!!!

I think what spooked her, as it's happened before, was a dog, because now she hears the dogs outside and freezes.

She's very tired but still too excited to sleep.

We stare at each other with wide eyes now and then, as if saying "thought I'd never see you again". :)
