My kitten is a freak

My kitten does numerous weird things. They still seem cat-like, but just pressed a little bit too far.

First off, she eats anything ANYTHING that is on the floor. Little bits of paper, carrots, tofu, lettuce, little pieces of lint, anything thats not stuck to something else, she'll attempt to eat. She's actually tipped my coffee off of an end table so she could have some. I have to be very careful when cooking with garlic or onion, because she hears the krinkling noise of the skins and comes running to see if anything stray falls. It's pretty much impossible to monitor this, because it's a continuous scavenge. Is this normal? I've heard of cats eating lint and paper, but never things like, lettuce, and broccoli rabe.

Second, she is obssessed with shiney objects. Rings, keychains, coins, things of that nature. She will hunt them down as soon as she hears the metal hit a surface, she's staring, waiting for you to leave so she can sneak up onto your dresser and take your rings, or earrings. She picks them up, carries them in her mouth and deposits them in the bathroom. She then pushes them into a pile, under the radiator, behind the bathroom garbage. I don't understand this, because she can't get them back out after.

Third, she likes to play with water. After you shower, she's climbing in the tub sniffing anything thats wet, and god forbid you leave the toilet lid open. I've caught her splashing the toilet water in the bowl with her front paw on more than one occasion that it was left open. She does this same thing with her waterbowl. She also pushes her waterbowl around and splashes as much water as she can out onto the floor. She then proceeds to stand in the puddle, with all four feet, and drink the water. She does this with any size water dish I give her, and no matter how much I fill it up, she'll find a way to get it out. I don't know what to do, and I don't really want her drinking water off of the floor.

Anyone have any advice?

When she gets tired of doing the "weird" things you listed, she'll undoubtedly come up with something new to keep you confused.

(It's a cat thing....... )

Honestly...nothing there that somebody else's cat hasn't done. I'd just say you have to do a little better job of cat-proofing, that's all. :D

Ditto the above reply. Kitty's not a freak, just a normal playful cat. You'll need to catproof your house, just like you would kidproof for children. Polishing the housekeeping skills is your best bet. Keep the toilet lid down. Even human kids can't resist playing in the toilet, or sticking everything on the ground into their mouths!

Think of the upside: a lot less clutter, and a clean house all the time! At least your kitty hasn't figured out how to open the cabinets - we've had to install click locks on all of ours.

Actually, the house is pretty clean other than the little pieces of things that she manages to find and eat between vacuuming/sweeping. I just find it odd the she seeks out vegitables and black coffee. It's contemporary styling, so there's a futon and a couple of tables a dresser and not much else. She actually tips over jewelry boxes off the dresser, and they are now all kept on the closet. The only thing that is really still a problem is the water dish. She even leaves the plants alone, no interest whatsoever with them. She doesn't just splash a little water on the floor, she empties the dish. You'll wake up in the middle of the night to the ceramic dish scraping on the tile floor and by the time you get out there, the puddle of water is pretty big. She seems to like to get her feet wet, and she doesn't seem to like to drink out of anything, except off of the floor. She actually stands in the water, and a few cups of water in a dish spreads out pretty quickly on the floor. She also doesn't just move the dish a little, she'll move it across the room, like I said, until it's empty. This isn't my first kitten either, I've had them all my life growing up, and while some of them would play with the water in the dish, none of them ever did it to this magnitude.

Also, note that with the metal objects, she's not playing with them, she just goes and stores them in the bathroom... I would understand if she were playing with them... but not the storing

Triple ditto. kitty doing what kitties do.
My cats LOVE veggies! I brought in some swiss chard from the garden the other day and left it on the table for a second to answer the phone. When I got back I had both cats on the table (bad boys) happily munching away.

I know, isn't it funny, just when you think you've got cats figured out (mostly) there's always a surprise?

As for the veggies and coffee, there's always an odd one. I remember other members' cats liking cantaloupe and a few other fruit & veggies too.

Your description of the water bowl action is so hilarious. Here's a similar kitty: Cat splashing water all over

Storing is pretty normal too. There's a stockpile of toys, pens, and assorted items behind one sofa. Ginza also piles toys onto the middle of our bed too.

You'll have to forgive my thoughts on the cleanliness - I obviously misinterpreted your comments on 'little bits of paper, carrots, tofu, lettuce, little pieces of lint' on the floor. Things don't quite get conveyed properly sometimes!

Ah man that is so kitten like, and your story is soooo adorable. If I had your kitten right now I'd kiss her silly. My three were kittens at the same time, they were bouncing off the walls. We were amazed all of the time with their antics.

As long as it's relatively normal, I guess I'll have to get used to it. That link that you directed me to, SuperKitties, is pretty much the same things that she does, even the throwing litter all over, I have to sweep the bathroom once a day, at least, but I always thought that was fairly common. I know garlic and onions are bad for her, but are there any vegetables that I could give her that are okay, just to take the edge off the vegetable fetish? She seems to be particularly interested in broccoli, and soy products, are those okay? She's never getting coffee, I don't want to think about her all hopped up on caffeine :) As for her playing with the shiny things, my husband and I have invented a game where we kneel on the floor and toss a ring back and forth to each other, over the kitty. She runs around like crazy, but after a while looses interest. I’m hoping now that I’m making an effort to expose her to it, she’ll get bored of it, just like kitties do with all things you get for them. :) I’m not going to get a pet fountain, I’m pretty picky about my décor, but the Velcro sounded like a pretty good idea.

I'm not sure there is a "normal" when it comes to cats ... there's such a wide variety of personalities and individual preferences. Any of the green vegetables, along with lettuce is fine. As far as I know, soy is fine. There's soy in some cat foods. Of course, you know these foods don't give a cat the nutrition it needs, so you don't want to allow the vegetable fetish to replace regular kitten food.

Sounds like you have a lively and healthy kitten ... you're going to have a lot of fun enjoying her!! :D

I think most cats/kittens have their things. You're kitten sounds "normal" to me. Marcellus has has had a thing about earrings and eye glasses since he was a kitten. I can never leave them out unattended. He likes to knock things off dressers and tables and watch them go "Kaboom" so we have to watch what we leave on the table. He butts his head at the object until it falls and then he just watches with great satisfaction. Wallace chews cardboard and paper and books....so those, of course we have to keep out of his reach, although we will let him have cardboard boxes sometimes just so he can get his "chewies" satisfied. And heaven help us if we leave a roll of toilet paper or paper towels out....it's shredded in a flash! Wallace has a fondness for rubber bands too....have to keep those out of the way. Yes, life with cats. Enjoy your little kittten....makes me want another.

One of my kitties loves coffee - I have started drinking it in a travel mug so he can't get it. Otherwise I have to watch my cup continuously. The last thing I need is this kitty on a caffeine high

The other kitty likes beer - not fresh out of the bottle, but after some of the carbination is gone. Again, not something we want the kitty to drink regularly.

hmm. try using some kind of large lid as a water dish that will resemble a puddle. That way your cat doesn't drink it off the floor...she'll put her paws in it, but seeing as she licks those anyway it shouldn't be too bad...

water bottle

Hagakure,
Just wanted to let you know that my kitten (6 months now) is completely obsessed with water. The solution that I found works best is a water bottle, like the ones you use for gerbils etc. They come in large sizes and every time the kitten would splash around, I would introduce the bottle and squeeze it, dripping drops of water into the water bowl. After a few times he used the bottle and now that is all he uses! No more messy clean ups for me!!!! HTH

Glad to read we are not the only ones with weird cats … you really have got nothing to worry about!

We also have cats who love their vegetables, and I’ve got proof of one of them ...

And when it comes down to water, I even got one who loves to take a shower with my boyfriend:

These pictures are already quite a few months old, but they still do these things today. In the meantime we’ve adopted two more kitties and even they have their own “special” things, like sitting in the bathtub after we’ve left the bathroom and everything is soaking wet or eating anything that’s on the floor.

Just enjoy your little kittie and give her a hug for me!
