New foster kittens: sleeping in litter box, pooping in food

Hi all,

I will do an intro post soon :)

After Ruby and Lilly left I did a big clean up of the bathroom, crate, LB, bowls, all the supplies, and picked up a litter of 4 foster kittens who just came in as strays, were s/n as they were large enough, and I'm going to have them for a week to help recover/socialize before they move into an adoption center.

I picked them up this evening after they had their surgeries. I set them up in the crate and they immediately ran to the LB. I put Yesterday's News pellets in the LB because I was worried that the clumping litter would get into their incisions, but I'm worried they don't know what to do with it. One made an attempt to eat it, but gave up after he realized it wasn't food.

After a few hours of leaving them alone I went in to check and discovered that someone pooped in the food bowl!

I set up another box with a towel to give them another "enclosed" space to lay in instead of the LB in case that is what they are looking for.

Is it possible they don't know how to use an LB? As I mentioned they supposedly came in as strays (I say supposedly because sometimes people will dump their house cat's kittens) although they definitely need some more socialization.

Any tips on getting them OUT of the LB for sleeping purposes?!

And a thread about kittens without pics is just horrible so here are the little culprits, caught in the act...

Thanks!!

My Sprite did that when I first brought her home. She fell right asleep in the Feline Pine - but she didn't poop in the food.

Maybe if you take some of their poops and put it in the litter box so it smells like a toilet instead of a possible sleeping place? And what kind of food are you feeding - is it the same as what they were eating before? If not, maybe they don't recognize the scent of it. If you're feeding dry, you could try mixing some wet with it to make it smell more like food. Good luck, let us know how it works out!

china_cat84 has some good tips and I would second them. Feline pine (I believe) is pelleted, right? They may not understand it's a poop area since it's not clay-like. Putting some poops or pee in it would help establish it as such.

However, I simply gotta comment on the pic...real cute!
