Greetings to the forum...

My name is John and I live in Hickory, North Carolina. I'm joining this forum for several reasons and hope to make some friends and learn something as I go forward. I just lost my cat yesterday to what appears to be a combination of Diabetes, a mass of some sort in his lungs, pneumonia, and a bacterial infection that went septic. I adopted the cat from the Humane Society when he was 11 weeks old (in July of 2000) and we had to say goodbye to him yesterday at our Vet's recommendation. He will be missed dearly.

My girlfriend and I intend to adopt another Humane Society cat very soon... maybe as soon as next week. Therefore I need to learn what to do. My cat was an indoor only cat. He was never allowed outside and he was well cared for. He was fed what we thought was a good diet, but it appears that there is some amount of controversy over feeding a cat a fixed diet of dry cat food (Iams brand for his entire life.) I want to investigate the reality of a proper cat diet and hopefully find out of our choice of food for him contributed to his issues. When I adopted this cat in 2000, the Humane Society told me they were feeding him Iams kitten food and recommended that I keep him on the Iams diet. So that's what we did. The emergency vet where we ended up Sunday morning with the cat told us that a dry cat food diet contributes to Diabetic issues. So, I'm clueless at this point.

My cat was also de-clawed (front only) at the same time he was neutered. I want to investigate the options I might have with that on a future cat as well.

Thanks for having me!

Welcome, John!

I'm so sorry for your loss. :patback

I'm glad the ER vet said something to you, but please don't blame yourself because you followed the advice of "experts" in what to feed your cat. It's great that you want to explore other options.

Opening your home and offering a great life to another cat is a wonderful way to pay tribute to your Bridge kitty.

You should be able to post in the Health and Raw sections now. If not, hit F5 to refresh your settings.

Hey John, I'm actually from Hickory, NC as well. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I just read several weeks ago about dry food being.. less than desirable. My new kitten that I've been caring for has been on a strict diet of wet food. The last food I bought for him was Blue Wilderness and he seems to like that pretty well. I've stopped giving him "junk food" as I call it and now look at the ingredients when purchasing it.

Hi John,

It's good to have you on the forum, although I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty.

You'll get a lot of good information and advice on here. In general, the consensus is that wet food is much, much better than dry, although many of us feed a combination of the two. As one of our nutrition experts on here said, the worst wet food is better than the best dry food. That kind of puts it in perspective.

Welcome to the forum.

John, welcome to the forum. I'm in Hickory as well. I also was given mixed information from prior vets. My cat, Pancake, is 13 years old, and until joining this forum - I had no idea how bad dry food could be. I only wish I could go back and feed him only wet food - and natural, good quality wet food at that, for the entirety of his life. Unfortunately, until knowing this, he had been eating a mixture... 2/3 of his meals being wet, 1/3 being dry. Also, the wet food was store brand that don't have any good nutritional value.

He is now going through a process of trying different healthy brands of wet food. (Wellness, Tiki, BFF, and others with Senior Adult benefits) to find out which ones he will actually eat (very finicky!).

Best of luck in the search for a new kitty from the HS... and props to you for doing so!
