This is going to be long and I apologize in advance ...

My story begins over 3 years ago when I saved my Shadow from the local humaine society. I really wanted a dog, but the apartment situation led me to a cat. She was 1.5 years old and a terror at first. Leaping at my wife's (then girlfriend's) feet and hiding all the time. After a year or so of cuddling and love she was much better off.

Then we got Joey. Marlene insisted on another cat b/c she said Shadow didn't like her. Of course that wasn't the case - she was just not trying to get shadow to like her, but that's another story :D Anyway ... Joey comes along and within a few months he establishes his dominance. In that apartment (this would be apartment #2 for shadow) is when I can first remember her peeing anywhere other than the litter box. I can't recall if it was before or after joey arrived, but you will see why I am questioning it.

In my last apartment (#3 for Shadow) is when I can really pinpoint it. She would pee by the kitchen table, right at the baseboard, pretty frequently. More frequently though was her peeing by the door leading to the porch (where the litter boxes were). She happily went outside most of the time through the cat door, so I just assumed it was because I was bad at keeping up with the litter boxes and admittedly kind of didn't care since I didn't own the place. Our 3rd cat Katie made her way into our life after we were in this apartment for ~6 months. Katie is NOT agressive nor does she seek dominance. She is as laid back a cat as I have ever seen. I have to believe Katie is a non-issue for Shadow. The peeing continues ...

Now we're in our first house. Shadow was not peeing for the first month or two for some reason (or maybe we didn't notice?). Litter boxes were outside on the porch again and nothing had really changed other than scenery. Once she did start again, I was blaming myself again for the lackluster performance in the "Clean Litterbox" category.

Skip ahead to about 2 months ago. I am finally fed up. I'm cleaning the litterboxes regularly enough. She is peeing along the wall next to the kitchen table about 4 feet away from the cat door. This is the ONLY place she pees. There are 2 spots on the carpet along this wall she favors. Cover those spots up with tin foil, she picks a spot in between them. She's my FAVORITE cat and I was actually considering giving her away (and frankly I still am). Took her to the vet. Vet asked a bunch of questions (he's an amazing vet, really) and tested her for UTI. No UTI found. I moved a litter box inside (2 still outside), took the flap off the cat door and started using feliway. None of this worked. Called the vet back, and he gives us amitriptyline - citing that Joey may be tormenting her (he kind of is) and that he is at least sure it's a behavioral problem. States maybe both of them need to be medicated. My wife will not allow me to medicate Joey and I personally don't think he should have to be.

Shadow normally is a little skittish. Her quality of life is affected because everything scares her so much. The other two get scared, but Shadow nearly jumps out of her skin if we drop something on the floor. The ironic think is that in the last month or two (before medication), she has become SO much more affectionate. Really has become the lapcat I always swore to my wife she would become. Even hopping up on my wife's lap. (She really is SOOOO cute.)

It's now a little over a week later since starting meds. The amitriptyline zonks her a little bit AND she is still peeing. My nerves are shot. My entire downstairs smells like cat urine. I will be getting hardwood floors within 6 months, but I need to solve this problem before I go getting ANY kind of new flooring. I don't want the solution to be giving her away, but I am going crazy and it's becoming a real consideration. I called my vet again today and he will be calling me back, but I like to have information from all sources. I'm thinking a different drug may be called for.

Anyway, I'm so sorry for the long story, it's just important to have as much information as possible before making any suggestions. That said, any and ALL suggestions welcome. Maybe the human needs medication too ... lol. Seriously tho, ask questions, give suggestions, I need help.

OREO GANG! HA! That's like one of the cutest things I've ever seen!

I know how you feel. I've had pets that I loved dearly but they would have a behavior or health problem that made me feel like giving it away was the only answer, but it's not. It almost sounds like just a behavior problem, but then again I'm not sure. Maybe you could try putting a litterbox where she's going back over and over and peeing. If she uses the litterbox there, then it might just be she's so used to being next to the table. (not sure where exactly you said it was) Maybe she smells the urine there and keeps coming back? Is she also pooping there too, or does she go in her litter box? If she's pooping in her litterbox, then it may very well be a health issue. Trust me, I know how it feels having something wrong with your pet, and taking them over and over to a vet, just to have them scratch their own heads and tell you to see a specialist!

So just keep working with her and your vet! I hope you figure it all out!
