My husband and I had just adopted a 9 year old cat from the Humane Society last Satuday. He took to us immediately and we knew he was the one. Anyway, since we have brought him home, he hasn't used the litterbox, nor eaten anything more than a mouthful since he came home. He does drink a little, so that puts me a little at ease.

I took him to the vet yesterday, and they had to give him a shot for his "Kitty Cold" and sedate him to empty his really full (bloated) bladder.

What I want to know is how to get him to eat the food that the vet gave me (prescription diet food for nourishment), and the antibiotics? Is it normal behavior for a newly adopted cat? To not eat and avoid the litterbox? The litterbox is in a quiet corner of our computer room.

Please help.....I am so worried

No, this is absolutely not normal, nor is it normal to have a full bladder that can't be emptied without sedation. Please get a second opinion from another vet, preferably a feline specialist! If he has bladder stones, it's an emergency.

Good Luck!

Thanks for replying Dr.Jean

Well, the vet checked him out and done some urinalysis and there were not crystals, nor a urinarary tract disease. It was just normal (according to the vet) and that he was too stressed out to "pee"! :( I don't know.... I know the vet is highly recommended.....but that doesn't answer the question as to why he is not eating either.

Apology

I do apologize for posting twice...I must not be thinking. I am really sorry if I made someone upset or peeved with me.

Help Please?

Sid is well adjusted, well, he plays with us, comes when called, and wants to sleep with us in our bed.

The only snag is that he won't eat nor drink....and won't go potty....The vet has checked him out and he has nothing serious wrong with him except that he has an Upper Respiratory Infection - so he's on antibiotics.

Someone please tell me if they have similar problems with newly adopted cats? (Sid is 9 years old). I am in tears and have been praying non-stop!

If he hasn't eaten since Saturday, that's 5 days. He might be impacted. I would call the vet and ask her advice. I have seen Dr. Jean recommend vasoline for constipation. Perhaps that would help.

Are you temping him with various canned foods to see what he likes? He sounds happy, but cats can be very particular about what they want to eat.

Thanks for a reply

Jeanie,

I have tried coaxing him with the presription food wet food, and 2 kinds of dry food. The Humane Society said that his previous owner used to feed him Iams dry, and so I bought a small bag to mix in with the new food I am trying to feed him....then I resorted to just the Iams....still no luck.

But one piece of good news though, he went bathroom (pee) today! *YAY* and has started to clean himself!! (he wasn't cleaning himself at all!)

But I am still worried about his liquids and food intake.

Thanks again.

Some cats are REALLY finicky, try using the same type of bowl the previous owner used, as well as the same type of litterbox/litter, maybe that can help?

Hopeful....

Sid has been drinking and awful lot of water this morning....I took some wet food out for him and he's licking the moisture off that as well! Still not into eating though. He has used his litter box, although I have yet to see some sort of a poop. Hopefully this is the road to recovery? Thanks for all the support you guys! I really do appreciate it.

Sounds great, definitely on the way there! Yippee, keeping fingers crossed for more progress. Thanks for the update, I've been thinking of you all.

How about some tuna juice from a can of tuna? The smellier the better. Just occurred to me, sorry if it's been suggested already.

Have you tried the vaseline yet? He has to be constipated! Also, I would get some Nutrical to give him some added calories and vitamins. Not eating means that there is nothing to push the food (that he ate before this problem) moving through his system.
