I have not seen my cat, Lisa, eating or drinking at all today (it is 10:00 PM) I usually see her eating often because she really loves to eat. She ate a couple of treats earlier and a bit of meat but thats it. Now she refuses to eat even her favorite treats. When we pulled the back of her neck it went down slowly, which we know means dehydration. But she will not drink. She won't play with string either. Otherwise she is acting normal, no vomit, cuddly, active, purring. Her gums are pink and her ears are not hot. But she has been sleeping a lot today, almost all day. I can't get to the vet until tomorrow morning. She is 14 years old. I appreciate the help!

if you just noticed the problem today, then it's good that you're going to the vet tomorrow morning. that is very quick action luckily.

i suppose if you wanted to at least get her to eat or drink a little something, then you COULD try some plain cut up boiled chicken with the broth and/or some tuna if you happen to have a can lying around. the first would be nice an bland for her tummy and the second should smell really appetizing so that might stimulate her to eat a little.

good luck at the vet tomorrow! so glad you're getting in right away!

If you have a syringe, you could squirt it into the back of her mouth. Or, if she grooms herself still, wet her paw....

DO NOT Squirt any fluids into the back of a cats mouth!
They can easily aspirate it into their lungs causing horrible results!
Pull out a cheek pocket and slowly dribble the water/fluid into the cheek pocket giving the cat a chance to swallow it.

Okay, a few things. First of all, I think she may have an upper respiratory infection. She has had runny eyes and nose, and has been sneezing for a while. Apparently in most cases it can be treated easily. Also, are you sure I can wait until tomorrow? Could this be really serious or can it wait? And do you think it will be better by tomorrow?
Sorry, I'm just worried about her. She's probably the least picky cat you'll ever see.

If she has a URI that could account for her being off her food, if they can't smell it, it doesn't appeal to them.
Has she used her litter box today? Pee or Poo, or both?
The most important thing is water..

one day of not eating won't cause any serious side effects.

If you have an eye dropper or something similar, you could dribble some water into a cheek along the gum and give her a chance to swallow some.

I don't think one night without a lot of water will hurt...Since you are taking her to the vet tomorrow, where if she's dehydrated they will probably give her fluids subcutaneously...
I hope you get some more responses...
Hugs and prayers!

Still no eating today, and sudden diarrhea. Its soft and yellow, no blood.

So, here are the symptoms:
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Dehydration
Lethargy
Runny nose and eyes (has had it for a while, possibly a few weeks)

Alright, a couple more things, good and bad.
The good is that we got her some wet cat food and she ate a few bites.
The bad is that she threw up twice after eating it. Also we can't take her to the vet for a few more hours. I hope she starts eating soon.

My cat had very similar symptoms and the vet couldn't really find anything conclusive that was wrong. He ended up needing IV fluids and a few medications to get things running again, and then it happened again but he ended up passing a large string in his stool.

Puking after eating or drinking is a big issue if its happening every time like that. It means things aren't able to pass through the digestive track. Stomach acid is a yellowish color and if all the prior puke was yellow, your cat is likely puking up the stomach acids too. Mine was puking after food, water, or treats.

You can look up my posts (threads started by - hachi is sick) if you want to read through symptoms and what the vet said, but I'd get him to the vet as soon as possible. I waited too long and it ended up being more serious and more money.

She tried to drink a second ago but looked very uncomfortable. She was huffing and sneezing when she drank and she just dipped her mouth in and gulped instead of lapping it up. We also wet her paw but she didn't lick it.

Also, sorry about the dumb question but, we don't have a syringe and I really want her drinking. We can't use a straw to make her drink, can we?

Do you have any small bottles of eye drops?
If you do-You can empty one and rinse it well...
Then put water in it-Because of the dripper 'tip' on the bottle you won't have to worry about aspiratating her...
Drip the water into her cheek and let her swallow.

It is sounding like you need to get her to the Vet...Quickly!

I used the straw and I think I got half a strawfull in. She hates being held down so it was really hard and now shes angry with me. Is there anything else I can do? Does anyone know what this might be and if it could be just diarrhea?

If she tried to eat some canned earlier, put some more in a dish and add water to it, make it SOUP-EE! Maybe she'll try and lap it up...
If she just throws up again, there's not a lot you can do...
Has she used her litter box at all??
At her age, it could be any number of things...
That is why a VET is so important!

I know a vet is important, I would love to go to one right this second but unfortunately I can't drive. I am incredibly stressed about this, this is so unlike her.
Ill try the soup thing. She has used her litter box once to poop and she peed on a towel outside the litterbox; which sounds bad but she does it sometimes if we leave towels or blankets on the ground for some reason.

I feel like I'm going to break down if I don't know whats wrong soon. I don't know if I can wait 4 more hours.

Don't try to force fluids into her mouth, esp. if you are having to hold her down to do it. It's too easy for her to aspirate fluid into her lungs, which could make things MUCH worse for her. Wait for the vet appt. The vet will most likely administer fluids to rehydrate her. You could also ask the vet to teach you how to administer subQ fluids at home, if necessary.

The vet will also likely recommend a full blood panel, which should include a complete chemistry, CBC, and Total T4. Make sure that all of those are included. At your cat's age and in her current condition, you need those tests for diagnostic purposes.

Make sure you request copies of ALL lab reports and keep them in a file at home. You'll need them if you want to research her diagnosis online or even if you want relevant suggestions and insights from folks on forums like this one.

I wish you and your cat the best,

Laurie

I already did force a bit of water in her mouth. I think she is fine though.

Also, thanks 10cats2dogs for the idea, because she actually ate a bunch of the soup! She licked it off my fingers and ate some meat, which I am happy about. I am confused though, because some of it dropped on the ground next to her and she wouldn't eat it off the ground.

Okay, update.

I think she is improving, or she is just getting hungry. She just ate 5 soft treats. (I took them away so she wouldn't throw up) I put some wet dry food in front of her and she attempted to eat it but spit it out. She has difficulty eating and drinking. I think she wants to, but it hurts for some reason. It also looks kind of odd when she eats, her tongue kind of sticks out like shes lapping it up. The reason she ate the wet food and soft treats more than the dry food is probably because the dry food is uncomfortably hard. Does that sound like a tooth problem? Or maybe a throat problem?

She's still purring a lot though. :)

It could be the teeth, gums, cheeks, tongue, throat, or underlying bone ... or it could be something else entirely. It does sound like there is something causing her pain, from your description.

The vet should be able to figure it out and provide appropriate, and hopefully effective, treatment.
