Why is it recommended to have 1 more litterbox than the number of cats? We have 2 cats and 2 litterboxes. I'm not sure where we would put a 3rd, but besides that, why should there be a 3rd? We don't have any issues with the litterboxes, and I am just wondering.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't worry about it either. I've used one litter box for 2 cats before.

Unless there is a problem, 1 box for every 2 cats is plenty. Depends on how much they are cleaned also. We are having success right now with 2 boxes for 6 cats, so I guess it varies with the situation.
