oh no! blood in stool!

I got home from work today, fed Addison and watched some tv... he came out of my room a few minutes later into the living room and although the couch was blocking most of my view, it looked like he went right for the rug, plopped down and scooted across. He had been doing it for a week or so a while ago, so I brought him into work and they expressed his anal glands (they were full) and he didn't do it for a while after that so I assumed it was his problem. I'd see him do it once in a while, but nothing often enough to worry about (maybe once every few weeks) and I thought he might just like how it felt

or was too lazy to clean himself back there.

Well, after he was finished on the rug out here, he dashed off to my room, ran back out and started licking himself, then ran back to my room. I figured something was off and decided to have a look in the box. It seemed normal, no diarrhea, but when I started scooping, I noticed a little bit of blood on the scoop from one of the "fresh" piles. I'm ashamed to say I don't scoop nearly as often as I should but from what I notice when I clean the box, this is the first time I've seen blood. It wasn't a lot, just a slightly mucusy spot of blood.

I'm taking him in to see the vet when I go to work tomorrow (Wed.) afternoon, right after class... but until then does anyone know any of the more common reasons for blood in stool?

I feel so dumb since I work at a vet... you'd think I would know these things by now!

Well I forgot I had class and lab this morning

so I had to go straight to work from school... but I asked the vet and she said since its the only time I've seen it, not to worry about it but keep an eye out for any more. Its just something that might happen from time to time but since I've only seen a little blood this one time, its probably nothing.

One of our cats had the same problems. We took her to the vet and it was due to a developped sensitive stomach problem. So we swicthed at the recommendation of our vet to sensitive stomach and the problem was solved.

Now and again we sometimes run out of the sensitive stomach food, and then she starts to have bloody stools again. But once back on her sensitive stomach diet... she's ay okay!

We first tried Hill's Science Diet/Sensitive Stomach, and the bloody stools continued unchanged. Then we swicthed to medical gastrointestinal and it works well!

This is actually very common if you have recently switched foods. It's the body's way of dealing with the change. This happened to my dog after changing her food. Mucous and all! As lovely as that sounds.
