I wish we could all figure out what food we wanted to feed and be done with it! Its enough to make your head spin!

Ok, I have a pretty set list of foods I'm going to consider buying in the future. Any advice on them is appreciated :)

Evolve
Chicken Soup
Eagle Pack
Felidae
Merrick
Natural Balance
Natural Life
Pet Guard
Royal Canin
Wellness

I've already heard all about Chicken Soup, Felidae, and Wellness.

I've seen Royal Canin at Petsmart and it seems really expensive for what's in it. Not really impressed with that. Pet Guard seems like a good food, but its really expensive, so I think if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'll buy Wellness.

I bought some Evolve and Natural Life, neither of which I've tried before but seemed good for the price (not cheap, but not too bad). I have another thread about Evolve, so I'm not expecting to hear much new on this thread. Has anyone tried Natural Life? I've listed the ingredients below.

I'm also really curious about Merrick. I saw this first for dogs while I was looking for a new brand for my dog (she's on a diet). Its the most expensive I've seen at around a dollar for a 3.2oz can, but I don't know how good it is for pets. It doesn't mention if its "complete and balanced" and seems to be mostly meat and veggies. I think its something like Wysong, in that it isn't bad, but shouldn't be fed as the only food but rather once a week or so as a "treat." I highly doubt I'll be buying this any time soon, because Addison doesn't seem to eat the food I spend a lot of money on. My dog might be interested though... so I may look into buying some for her. Anyone got any info on the Merrick?

Anyway, Natural Life ingredients:

I bought the Lamaderm just because I have so many different brands of Chicken and Turkey cat food already, but no lamb flavors. I also got some Wellness Chicken and Wellness Turkey, along with Wellness Beef and Chicken because I don't have any beef flavors.

Okay, let me give my opinion on some of the ones you asked about.

As far as PetGuard goes, i just tried it yesterday and started a thread about it as well:

See http://www.catforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=8885

So far so good.

As for Natural Life Lamaderm:
I tried this last week and found it to be very dry for my cats taste. Though the first meal they did eat it with some gusto, the 2nd meal (rest of the can) was not quite as convincing. It did seem to lack any broth and my cats seem to really like the wetter of the wet foods. For $.99 per can (tuna sized can) I think I'll stick with the PetGuard - it was juicy and the 14oz can was only $1.35. Though I've seen it for $1.75 online.

Royal Canin:
I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone considers this a super premium food. It's got just as much corn gluten meal as some grocery store brands. So while it's great that it doesn't contain by-products or artificial flavoring, etc it still seems to be really overpriced and over-hyped for a bad that has a very high content of corn and grains.

Oh and Chicken Soup has been successful in my house - I do mix with other dry foods though. I think it is better (ingredients wise) than all the grocery store brands and brands like Iams, Nutro and Royal Canin, however, I have been seeing some mixed reviews recently.

Seems that their is some inconsistency in the quality and or freshness because some folks have had experiences with their cats only eating Chicken Soup from every other bag or so. I wonder if it has anything to do with how long the bag has been sitting onthe shelf at the store. It probably doesn't get tossed into the shopping cart as frequently as Cat chow, so I'd suspect it's more prone to sit there for a while until someone who has actually heard about it comes looking for it.

Marina, I'm glad that little Marshy is doing good on Royal Canin, and I can honestly say I've never tried it, but based on the ingredients don't you think the content of corn gluten, etc is a little high for the price you're paying?

Geez...how about a run on sentence for ya!

And, maybe I'm a little biased, because I'm a big fan of Marsh's, but I'm inclined to say he'd have an incredible coat regardless! :D

OMG!!! that made me laugh!

You know, you might be right, but i think that either Royal Canin or a food one step higher would have the same result. And truthfully, since my breeder feeds her guys this same dry and they all look fantastic and have no health problems, i'm doing the same. :D

Btw, take a look in this thread, my breeder sent me the latest picture of his sister, and she's a spitting image of Marsh. That picture is amazing, she takes the best shots i've ever seen of cats :D http://www.catforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=80837#80837

I agree that the Royal Canin is extremely overpriced. I look at it whenever I'm at Petsmart, thinking "this time, it'll be better" but its not.

You crack me up. I do that too. I look the the labels of the same products over and over thinking they will magically have better ingredients.

I guess it's similar to the way I stand in front of the refrigerator for extended periods of time expecting something to magically appear in there too!
